Fritz Hollings' To Retire- This Is Not Good News For Us Dems
Not good news at all.

He was one of the few Dems that could hold that seat.

I remember when he won in 98 and brought in a Democratic governor with him.. He said " I'm giving you a party (insert constitution) if you can keep it. I forgot which one of our founding fathers said it first.

Fritz was certainly to the right of me but he was one of the good guys. He was the first southern governor to endorse John Kennedy.

Enjoy your retirement Fritz, you earned it....

1. big shoes to fill
Even if he ran for reelection, it would be hard to hold the seat. The Repubs control so much of SC now that the traditional donors have jumped ship. The SC Democratic Party is having trouble raising enough to put on the Presidential Primary next year. Fritz could not have counted on the Senate Campaign Committee either, as they hate to throw money into a Repub state like SC.

If Hollings had run, he could have won again, but he's already spent 50 years in public service, and we have to respect his desire to retire. He lost his house in SC to fire a couple years ago, and I think that really took the heart out of him.

Good luck, Fritz!
