Truth dodges a bullet: USAToday not buying UK Telegraph

http://www.brandrepublic.com/mediabulletin/news_story.cfm?articleID=206389&Origin=MB29032004

LONDON - Gannett, owner of USA Today, has become the second bidder to quit the race for the Telegraph Group, saying that the price being asked was too high.

Gannett follows Express Newspapers owner Richard Desmond, who pulled out of the race to buy the Daily Telegraph on Friday when his Northern & Shell holding company failed to bid high enough.

The Sunday Times cited an unnamed executive at Gannett as saying that the price being asked by Hollinger International for the Telegraph Group was "crazy".

In the second round of bidding the billionaire Barclay brothers are said to have offered a sum of around £670m for the Telegraph titles.

1. Ha ha! The dollar collapse hurts, eh gannet-liars
The Pound cost in dollars knocked them out. Dollar buying power
is dropping like a stone. Phew! The weaker the dollar, the weaker
american power to distort the truth.

Indeed it did dodge a bullet. Expect the Barclay brothers to get
it "again" this time with hollinger board approval.
