If we take back our country, list of names for the history books --
I'll start with some, and I'm thinking of people of conscience, mainstream names, who stepped up and spoke out, when very few did, and made a difference. Others please add:

Richard Clarke
Senator James Jeffords
Senator Robert Byrd
Coleen Rowley
Kristin Breitweiser, Stephen Push, the 9/11 families
the people of MoveOn
internet bloggers
Paul Krugman
Bev Harris
Ambassador Joseph Wilson
Secretary Paul O'Neill
Governor Howard Dean
General Wesley Clark
Senator John McCain
David Kay
Michael Moore
Al Franken
Jon Stewart

28. Soros is one person I've
changed my opinion of drastically. He is a good person trying to do the right thing. I may not always agree with his take on things, but I definitely will listen to what he has to say.

11. Jessica Lynch
represents how the neocons used and abused military personnel and Ms Lynch demonstrated the courage and moral fiber to stand up and refuse to be their poster girl to further inflame bigots in this nation.

And the history books best not forget the few journalists and cameramen who actually tried to get stories out and paid with their lives so others would be intimidated into silence.

14. As a footnote to Ms Lynch and the story of her honor
let us be thankful for the wisdome of John Kerry's lovely wife. Teresa Heinz Kerry made sure Jessica's family got to visit here in the hospital in Germany. It was probably a good thing someone besides military brass (likely to be vigorously promoting the using Jessica as a poster girl) got to spend time with the young lady as she mended.

She came from somewhere and so did her moral convictions. It was most decent and wise to send those people who love her most to remind her she is not alone in the world of those who think the ends always justify the means.

16. Al Franken and Jon Stewart
Edited on Mon Mar-29-04 12:24 PM by cally
When all the media refused to tell the truth, they did in a humorous way which made it acceptable to most.

edit: I just saw them on your list. I also agree about Michael Moore. He showed that liberal books have market value. He funded much of his book tour without much media attention at first. Yet, he hit #1. I think he woke the media up that there is still opposition to the right wing cabal. I don't think that many of the books we are enjoying would have had publishers without Michael Moore's success.

22. I'll second those two as well. I want to add Al Gore, despite some of...
his mistakes and pratfalls. He actually has been ardently
opposed to Bush's war.

They were one of the first orgs. to rise up against the right-wing tide, and to organize voters.

25. From across the pond: Tony Benn (sp?)
Tony Benn, 80, served in Britian's parliament for 51 years and now is the leader of a prominent UK peace group (whose name, alas, escapes me).

Two weekends ago, Benn flew from London to New York to participate in the march to commemorate the first anniversay of the start of the Iraq war. He also delivered a stirring speech and gave an excellent interview to Amy Goodman of Pacifica Radio's "Democracy Now!"
