Republican heroes
Richard Clarke
Paul O'Neill
Scott Ritter

Who else am I missing here? I'd like to have a big honking list of Republicans whose patriotism and decency have trumped their partisanship.

8. The media has called him a "registered Republican"...
However, it seems things aren't so cut-and-dried. From _Salon_:

Conason: Is it true that you're a registered Republican, as someone told me yesterday?

Clarke: Well, I vote in Virginia, and you can't register as a Republican or a Democrat in Virginia. The only way that anybody ever knows your party affiliation in Virginia is when you vote in a primary, because you have to ask for either a Republican or a Democratic ballot. And in the year 2000, I voted in the Republican presidential primary. That's the only record in the state of Virginia of my interest or allegiance.

Conason: Will you tell me whom you voted for in the Republican presidential primary in Virginia in 2000?

Clarke: Yeah, I voted for John McCain.

So, I guess he's not a registered Republican, but he does seem to self-identify as a Republican. Or did, until the goons who took over that party started their latest round of slander.

10. Only thing I have heard from him on it is...
...that he is an Independant. *shrug* It is worth noting that in 2000 the Democrats really didn't have a primary to speak of. As VP Gore was pretty much a shoein.

3. It seems to me that the word 'hero' is being overused...
...to the point where it's becoming meaningless. I've seen 'hero' cops, firemen and soldiers...but calling politicians heros for telling the truth is going a bit overboard. It's their friggin jobs and duty to tell the truth.

6. John McCain ...
not because he is Repuke.

His bravery and steadfast loyalty in Vietnam is 2nd to none. He is a true hero. I just wish he would come to his senses and get the hell out of the Party of Chickenhawks.

Cheers

7. Maybe McCain has been trying
to reform the party from within. I have a good friend who has always been active in rethuglican caucuses, conventions, primaries, etc, but when the general election came around she always voted against the bastards. She was trying to reform them from within. HOWEVER, this year, for the first time in her life, she voted in the Democratic primary. She has given up on having any impact on the repukes. Maybe as you suggest McCain will do the same.

Nice to see a fellow Zappatista in here.

9. Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt
Henry Stimpson, Thomas E. Dewey, William Cohen, and, with all due respect to Senator Kerry, William Weld. Could probably name a bunch more.

Does he count even though he's not a Republican anymore?

How about Kevin Phillips?
