Should we be happy, sad, mad?

Do any of these polls mean a thing?

We need to know so desperately what these numbers mean, and have to have it on a daily, if not hourly basis. This, in turn, requires hundreds of people who create these polls and then carpal tunnel themselves silly gathering all the "datum". Next is another cadre that "interpret" the datum, telling us what we really mean when we say what we know what we mean, but they're sure we only think we mean it and won't be sure we really mean it unless they agree that we mean it.

Finally there's the chattering class that uses this data like a sportscaster gives scores. It's supposed to tell us whose "winning" or "losing"...as if the election were right this second and the latest ripple has lasting implications. Yawn.

This is what my late father called mental masterbation. It's a national fascination.
