I've perused this board for months now, using a lot of the links to post articles on a political forum that's on a sports board that I help moderate. I've tried to post here before, but apparently you have to have a certain number of replies here before you are able to start a thread.:)

19. Actually...i've been signed up under many different names,
no, I have been signed in a bunch of different times but I keep forgetting my passwords (and I can never seem to find the password lookup link).

I know you won't belive it, but really, I am a liberal (although I do think some of you are complete nutjobs sometimes), and I read DU daily and go through the forums on lunch break. Really, I'm bored. I understand I'm only 15 minutes in, but I am. I listen to rush in the afternoon to angry up my blood. Maybe that's the difference between me and other people. I'd actually rather listen to opposing opinions rather than just have mine validated. Honestly, I think that's why this will fail within a year or two. Liberals tend to want to hear the other side, we tend to want to understand why other people think the way they do. Conservatives don't. Conservative just want their own stupidity reinforced.

I must beg to differ with you in my attitude toward talk radio. I AM one of those who likes to have my opinion validated. PARTICULARLY in this day and age when everyone on the air, on both radio and TV, seeks to go WAY beyond merely challenging my views. No. They don't just challenge my views. They assault, demonize, villify, condemn, abuse, misconstrue, misrepresent, ridicule, and distort my views. I CANNOT find it in my heart to be an enabler of these people.

If they did their thing in a civil manner instead of being ether-terrorists, that would be one thing, and I might even find them listenable. But they choose not to be civil, or to promote civil discourse and exchange of ideas. And if there were more liberals and moderates on the air providing equal time and TRUE balance to the spew, that would also be reason to listen. But there isn't. It's WALL-TO-WALL conservatives. Any glance through the industry trade paper "Talkers" would prove that. Their latest issue, with the "Heavy Hundred" listing they put together every year, once again is so dominated by right-wingers, most of them QUITE strident and shrill, that it's beyond painfully obvious.

Further, I've witnessed a rather dangerous impact that the All-Right-Wing-All-The-Time shtick has. Take Pox News. First of all, there's no opposing view presented. At all. Second of all, as such, they claim, and repeatedly label themselves, as "fair and balanced." So people who tune in then start making the jump in their own minds, to connect two VERY disparate and conflicting concepts as though they are synonymous. Oh, yeah, Fox News. Well, they can't say they're "fair and balanced" if they're not, can they? Of course they are "fair and balanced."

Well, lemme tellya something: MY OWN HUSBAND tunes in to the Pox Network far more frequently than I think he should. He says it's wise to know what your enemy's up to. I CAN see the logic. Hold your friends close, and your enemies closer. Okay, fine. BUT: I also noticed something rather distressing. During the run-up to war, MY HUSBAND, MY FELLOW-HIPPIE, PEACE-NIK, MODERATE-TO-LIBERAL LIFE-LONG DEMOCRAT was starting to become taken in by the Pox Network spew and nonstop lies. Because that is what he was watching. He only heard one side of the story, therefore. He only heard the war drums beating and beating and beating and how rotten Saddam was and how wonderful and wise bush was and how this was gonna be a cakewalk and how great and fabulous and magically foolproof and floral it was all gonna be. And there were times when I actually saw his thinking and reasoning adversely affected by this. At one point, he actually turned to me, and a couple of architect friends who were visiting, and said that eventually, bush was probably going to be proven to be a great president. HE WOULD NEVER EVER EVER EVER have even entertained such a preposterous notion, had he not been mainlining the Pox Network. He sure as HELL wouldn't ever hear it from me. Or these friends, or most anybody else we hang with. He was starting to take, as truth, the crap they were spewing about all the WMDs and the imminent threats and the linkage of Saddam and 9/11 (and to everything else that's EVER gone wrong in the world, for that matter, other than those evils directly caused by Clinton, of course). It really, truly, began to distort his thinking.

I had to pull him back like some cult deprogrammer, and show him the light. And it was sometimes difficult. Especially when Colin Powell went to the UN. Of course the Pox News people went completely orgasmic. Lots of people like me got shook up. But we held our ground and kept reading and kept seeking out other sources of information and truth. For awhile, my husband even scoffed at some of mine. Like the Asia Times and the Times of India and the UK Guardian and the Australian news and Le Monde and the rest of it. The shit he gave me for looking at an Al Jazeera story once!!! Well, I think to be really fair and balanced you DO need to see all this other stuff, to get a full spectrum of thought, and see how others are seeing the events, and us as Americans and our reactions to it. The folks at Pox News would choke off EVERY OTHER INPUT SOURCE but their own, and their party-line. EVERY BIT as much as this White House and its partisan pals in Congress and right-wing think tanks everywhere attempt to stifle dissent.

If MY HUSBAND, as liberal and reasonable and well-educated as they come, can be swayed and "mind-drugged," then I fear for the rest of America. I choose to resist. And every time I walk into our bedroom and find the Pox Network on, I change the channel. If I were in control of the cable box, I'd ask Adelphia not even to furnish the Pox Network to my home. And I'd tell 'em why. They're offensive to me as a former journalist who always tried to cover and disseminate the news as objectively as I could. They're just offensive, period. DITTO the many (TOO many) Rush-bots out there on the air, too.

Just as I adamantly "don't buy books by crooks" - as we were reminded during the Watergate era - I don't patronize partisan crap. Just can't do it. Besides, I have low blood pressure, and I prefer to KEEP IT THAT WAY, thankyouverymuch.

And you know what? If they're boring, I'm still going to listen. It's a quest. A crusade for the light. I'm setting a car radio button the next time I get behind the wheel. Just on PRINCIPLE.

It has been slow so far. And he's just been repeating the same bits he's been running around spouting on talk shows the preceding weeks. It's just been tired thus far.

I'm more excited about the program AFTER Franken's. O'Franken Factor just needs to be more polished. It will get better after Franken settles into I'm sure, but as it is...

Just because he's Al Franken and the only liberal on right now, doesn't mean we all have to salivate at his mere existence !!

Jeezus pizza, do Dems all have to be sheeple and go blindly over the cliff like the Freepers have ?? I was under the impression that critical thinking skills are what separated us from them.

The poster is entitled to their opinion and if something's lacking in the show, for whatever reason, they are entitled to say so. It's called constructive criticism and can actually be more helpful than mindless yes-men sitting by in complete adulation.

33. Liddy is a criminal
It's not just a matter of differing political opinions. The guy broke into the Watergate and Ellsberg's therapist's office at the behest of Nixon and his cronies.

A little info on your pal: "Liddy was convicted for his role in the Watergate break-in, for conspiracy in the Daniel Ellsberg case and for contempt of court, spending about 4 1/2 years in prison. In 1986, a federal appeals court found Liddy liable for $20,499 in back taxes on Watergate slush-fund money, rejecting his claim that he did not benefit from the more than $45,000 he had received. As one of the White House "plumbers," Liddy spent about $300,000 engineering political dirty tricks and the Watergate break-in..."
