Georgia General Assembly Passed Gay Marriage Ban
Edited on Wed Mar-31-04 07:05 PM by GaYellaDawgDem
The House is going through the amendments now with a vote on the resolution (SR 595) to add a gay marriage ban to the Georgia constitution. Go to http://www.legis.state.ga.us and click on "live broadcast" to listen. My blood pressure medicine is not working right now...

Damn...it passed with 122 votes...needed 120...

1. And there was cheering in the background...
when the vote came up on the board there were some whooping and cheering. One representative called for a reconsider but was rejected due to the fact that is was reconsidered already. Now I get to have my rights decided by the voters of Georgia.

www.ajc.com has a breaking news bullet about the ban being sent to the voters with "story to come".

2. that's just fucking wonderful.
Goddamned superb. What a fine example of political cowardice in such a fine, freedom-hating state.

3. If there's a bright side...
The House Rules committee chairman (Calvin Smyre) was the last to speak and he started with something like - 'let's call this what it is'. He basically said it wasn't about marriage, it was about taking away rights. He also mentioned that the eyes of the country were on Georgia and what have we shown them, the flag debacle, the dismissal of evolution and "now this". (Bright side over) x(

4. Smyre had the opportunity, a couple of weeks ago,
to bottle this up in committee.

9. You are right...
it was just the only somewhat decent thing I heard from the House well in the 20 minutes before the vote. I knew while listening that it way too late to be appealing to the common sense of those who want to control the lives of others they don't understand. They were so ready to pounce on this vote that they probably didn't take but 5 - 10 minutes to vote down a couple of proposed amendments to the resolution. The glee was sickening...

8. we drove through "old" Roswell last fall
Not a bad place, for all that I loathe the top side of the perimeter in general. There are plans afoot for another local gathering at Piedmont Park in a couple of weeks. You should come.
