Auntie Pinko needs you!
Today's question is: what five things would Auntie Pinko do to improve the economy and increase jobs for the long term?

After giving her answers, Auntie Pinko has a challenge for her readers. She would like you to answer the question:

Readers, what one measure would you suggest should be taken as soon as possible to address our economic problems?

Send your answers to mail@democraticunderground.com. Make the subject of your email "Economic Fix for Auntie" and please keep your answers short (50-100 words). Auntie Pinko will read your answers, and next week her column will feature a few of the most interesting and provocative.

One rule: It's assumed that the best thing we could do is to defeat Bush and other Republicans in the next election, so all answers focusing on this idea will be discarded. Take that as read, in other words, and suggest the second-best thing.

Auntie Pinko's latest column is here.

Thanks,
EG

2. Well, I haven't read Auntie Pinko
since her column tossing out a slightly "kinder, gentler" set of rightwing positions on abortion, and don't intend to. And I don't believe "she" is a woman, either.

However, since this is an important subject, I'll offer this, without any effort to make it some kind of contest entry (bah!):

Stop the hemorrhaging of jobs overseas. Immediately. And bring back the ones that have left. It's GOT to stop. I'm concerned about all jobs, but this year especially, the stampede has been IT jobs which strikes at the very heart of the middle class. We've lost our manufacturing base, now we're losing our information technology base. That leaves Burger King and Wal-Mart. And these only until they gear up the robots.

There's beeen lots posted here at DU on the subject. Look it up.

I was talking to a friend about it last night. She's a tech writer. She told me that just recently two big IT departments in Atlanta have closed down their TECH WRITING functions, sending these jobs to India too. No doubt for all the "1300 jobs" sent to India news items, there are scores if not hundreds of other companies who don't put out press releases on the subject.

Best, quickest tactic might be severe taxation consequences upon sending jobs overseas. Some states tried to pass laws to prevent it, but the Bush administration shut that down too. They WANT any of us who don't contribute our $2000 to the RNC or Bush-Cheney Re-Selection Campaign to be serfs.

4. agree!
Do we really want to equalize our standard of living with that of India? That's what will happen in enough of our jobs go overseas and our wages fall.

5. Thanks
But I think you missed the point. You're supposed to send your answer to Auntie Pinko. The point is to give people a chance to get their ideas for economic fixes on the homepage, with preference given to the "most interesting and provocative." Auntie Pinko thought it would be a fun way to get people involved in her column.

Since you don't read the column I can understand why you missed the point, because she already answers the question five times today. So there's not really any need for her to "look it up."

EG

PS. I can assure you that Auntie Pinko is a woman.

7. Eloriel, I can certainly agree with you on that
I wish someone had stopped this when Bush I and Clinton started it, back before white collar professionals started to get hurt. I'm afraid many people won't have any sympathy.

9. Eloriel has a point.
Auntie really hacked me off with her abortion rhetoric. But in retrospect, I realize that the abortion issue is a lose/lose topic. Instead of galvanizing, it polarizes. And I believe that is the whole point of it being inserted into the political debate in this country. Most of us are starting to realize this. Another polarizing issue is gay marriage.
The important issues are all outlined in AP's recent article. I suggest, Eloriel, that you break that promise with yourself like I did, and read it. I found Auntie's ideas to be provocative.
