BUSH LIE OF THE DAY

The White House, the Wall Street Journal, and Christian conservatives have been crowing since June over news that President George W. Bush's favorite faith-based initiative is a smashing success.

When he was governor of Texas, Bush invited Charles Colson's Prison Fellowship to start InnerChange Freedom Initiative, a fundamentalist prison-within-a-prison where inmates undergo vigorous evangelizing, prayer sessions, and intensive counseling. ...

InnerChange started with 177 volunteer prisoners but only 75 of them "graduated." Graduation involved sticking with the program, not only in prison but after release. No one counted as a graduate, for example, unless he got a job. Naturally, the graduates did better than the control group. Anything that selects out from a group of ex-inmates those who hold jobs is going to look like a miracle cure, because getting a job is among the very best predictors of staying out of trouble. And inmates who stick with a demanding program of self-improvement through 16 months probably have more inner resources, and a stronger determination to turn their lives around, than the average inmate.

The InnerChange cheerleaders simply ignored the other 102 participants who dropped out, were kicked out, or got early parole and didn't finish.

This is really putrid.

1. Love it! We need a Bush Lie of the Day thread EVERY DAY.

It's a great idea. If you put the date in the thread title, we'll be able to search back for the daily LIE thread. The only problem is, how to choose only ONE lie per day!

2. I'll be checking in as often as possible with a new lie of the day.

I think it's a good public service, to illustrate just how many lies he's told.

It's also good ongoing research for a magazine article (I'm thinking of Spy Magazine's great "1001 Reasons to Vote Against Bush" that appeared in 1992. Reason number 1: the "other" Jennifer...)

3. I also like the idea of a daily Bush Lie of the Day thread.

It also should be emailed to journalists. Especially the one or ones who allowed that day's particular lie to go unchallenged. If Turd Blossom Rove doesn't allow Bush to speak on a particular day, the lie for that day could be one of the more egregious past lies.
