Bush Picks an Ex-Marine as Chief of Selective Service
The Associated Press
Published: Aug 5, 2003

CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) - President Bush has picked a former lobbyist and ex-Marine as director of the Selective Service.

Bush said Tuesday he intends to nominate William A. Chatfield to the post.

The Selective Service would provide manpower to the military if an emergency forced a draft. It collects young men's names through the Selective Service registration system.

Maybe this is what shrub was trying to "slide" under the radar. I'm sure this would please America.

1. There are Marines and then there are Marines.
I'd like to see this guy's service record. Someone who ended up as a basically Republican lobbyist for decades, sucking up to powerful people and handing out the bribes, probably was a political gamesman in the Corps - you know, always an aide to someone in headquarters - no battle experience. Or maybe he did one tour of duty in peacetime. You can be sure that if he'd gotten any significant battlefield decorations, that would have been highlighted in the press release. Notice the article didn't give a single detail about his length or type or dates of service. At least that's my cynical view.

And you know what? I'd like the person who will be sending thousands of our young people into the hell of battle, to have gone through that crucible himself.
