Could an African American from either party become Pres yet?

I'm asking because, I have to say, I REALLY like Mosely-Braun (sp). I know she doesn't stand a chance as Presidential candidate, but would she help or hurt as VP?

For that matter, would a respected AA Republican have a chance? Say if Colin Powell or Condaleeza Rice entered the race in 2008 (no, I don't respect them, but Repugs might). Would they have a chance? Or just be given a polite entry to the forum, then quickly ditched for another Son of a Bush?

And I disagree. I think that if a black, woman or gay were nominated and had the qualifications and pesonality that they could get elected. It seems to me that the stakes are just so high that the party activists are too afraid to try.

met and worked with powell when he was in the army for a time in the 80's and told me then that Powell would be the first black President.

To have a Black person run in the VP position. A Powell in the Repuke VP spot would be the death knell for the Democratic party (If the Repukes are first).

people forget how old powell is, by 2008 he will be 71.

"Con"di seems to be getting pushed that way. But my own thoughts are that she is probably gay and that would "come out" in a VP run--so, they will never have her in that slot.

But I do hope the Democrats are the first to run a viable African-American for VP or CIC. And by viable I do not mean a Black DINO.

He is a pro-choice republican that seems to prefer diplomatic solutions over war. I think he could captures the entire middle spectrum both repug and dem.

but I do not think an African American could win in 2004 or 2008. Another question is can an African American win a senate seat in 2004, 06 or 08? Right now there are zero African American senators. The situation for women is not much better.

Powell Could win right now as a Republican.

I know a few conservative Republicans - in Texas - that really like Colin Powell and would vote for him. There are also freepers that have suggested Rice to replace Cheney.

The Republicans have been trying very hard to jettison or hide their anti-black wing - of which there are a lot - and the tokenism you see from them is a reflection of that.

Think about Trent Lott and the Republican's new strategy of pointing out things like Byrd's former Klan membership. I don't think they want the black vote, they just want enough to hurt us.

there is clearly no hope for this election. I would love to see Al Sharpton debate bush*. He is, in every instance I have seen, the most at ease with his positions on the topics presented. He is fiery, pulls no punches, and speaks the language of the common man. I have made no decision at this point, but every poll or "'who will you vote for" thread, Al has been my choice.

Think about it;
Al debating bush* and he uses the "I am the conservative" line from yesterday. bush*s feeble synapses would implode. "What? You're the conservative? Unka Dick, I thought I was, What am I again? Compassionless Contortionist?, Loving Liberal? AGHAGHAGHGH, Unka Dick I wanna go home!"

What are "they" gonna do, smear him about Tawana Brawley? Old news, Al's already been through the wringer. Smear the name "democrat" because Al is the nominee? They already did that with the last Al. Sharpton's message, given the chance, with his delivery, could win the day. It is a shame that he is not given more thought by those whom he represents in his speeches.

For full disclosure, I say this with the greatest fear of the ending of seperation of church & state as my cornerstone issue. My better-half was even surprised that I would even think of supporting someone with Reverend for their title. It is clear that Al is fully open about his religion and at least to me, able to understand that religion and politics are different animals. Unlike the current resident that receives policy messages from god.

A progressive Black person would probably need a "Perot" to split things up. A Black Republican wouldn't make it through the primaries. Powell, for instance, is too pro-choice, pro-gay and pro-affirmative action.

In 2000 Powell could have won the General election but I think he is too liberal to have gotten the GOP nomination. I doubt the 1st Black president would be Republican for this reason. Any Black Republican that is conservative enough to get the nomination would be an Uncle Tom and any Black Republican who could win the general election would probably be too liberal to win the nomination.

I hate to say it, but there are way too many freaky armed individuals out there.

Yes blacks could get elected, Powell is a real possibility.

I remember he scared the sh*t out of Clinton in the pre-primary season of 91. Powell's approval ratings were like 85%+ across the board. I think he would still appeal to both sides...He is a moderate repub, pro choice, pro affirmative action, strong military background...I think he could do it if he really wanted to.

Harold Ford Jr. could have viable presidential odds in a future election cycle.

Stephanie Tubbs-Jones also could become president, but I think she'd have to be V.P. (for Kerry) first.
