LOTTERY WINNER ROBBED AT STRIP CLUB
Edited on Wed Aug-06-03 02:23 PM by sangha
"More than $500,000 was stolen from a sport utility vehicle that a Powerball millionaire parked at a strip club, but the money was recovered, a sheriff's deputy said. ...A sheriff's deputy said Mr. Whittaker carried large of sums of money because he liked to gamble. (AP)"

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/06/national/06BRFS5.html

Maybe I'm misremembering this, but wasn't this the guy who was gonna give the money to his church?

1. You cannot save sinners
if you do not go where they sin.

Perfectly understandable to be at a strip bar at 5 AM.

9. Prolly wanted to lay the old hands on a Lap Dancer or three?
He was lookin' for Jazziebelle to cast out her devils?

Lookin' for love in all the wrong places?

Saw what the TV ministers did and wanted to be like Jimmy Swagger?

The Devil Made Him Do Dat?

Looking to start a nice home for unwed Harlots?

Caught with his hand up something it didn't belong?

Got too 'into the Spirits' and made a wrong turn somewhere?

Transported there by an extratesticle space roketship with lawn tractor beam?

Sunday School Rattle Snake got loose and ran in that sinful place and had to follow it in there and catch it?

House of the Immaculate Silicone Busom?

500Gs would go a looooooooooong way in a strip club. Especially if you got ones.

4. A fool and his money
If it weren't for the lottery, they'd have never gotten together in the first place.

5. Actually, if I remember correctly
this guy was rich before he won the lottery. He owned several businesses and a private helicopter (or was it a jet?).

10. You are correct sangha
He was a sucessfull developer or contractor when he won the lottery. I also seem to remember hearing that one of the things he did after winning the lottery was to use it to shore up one of his businesses and re-hire about 25 employees that he had had to lay-off earlier.

I am not really defending this man, I just want everyone to know that there is more to him than this one incident which will be played up in the media for its tabloid value.

I am originally from WV and this guy, Jack Whittaker, is from the same area of the state that I am from. He did make statements to the press after he won the powerbal lottery that he would donate 10% of his winnings to 3 diferent churches actually. From the news I have read and from talking to relatives who still live in the area, Mr. Whittaker has made good on those promises.

I am also aware that he has donated funds of around $70,000.00 to the local Little League in my hometown for them to re-furbish their fields, bleachers and concession stand. Mr. Whittaker has also bought a local racetrack near Beckley,WV and revamped it completely by installing a new grandstand, bathroom facilites and concession facilites.

I just wanted everyone to know that this man, while certainly no angel, has done much to contribute back to his local community after winning this huge lottery and seems to be genuinely concerned with helping his neighbors.

There was a quote in the article printed in my local newspaper, which went into more detail than the one linked here, where he stated that he was just a business man who had had failures and sucesses like everyone else. He said that he would not make excuses for his behavior, but his personal life was jus that, HIS PERSONAL LIFE. I thought it was refreshing to see someone tell the press and the public, "Hey, mind your own damn business !"

14. Oh I know what you mean flyingfish
and I don't mean to sound indignant and offended. I just wanted everyone to know that from what I know of him, this is a pretty decent guy overall. (although maybe a bit dumb to leave that kind of money in his SUV, but maybe it doesn't mean that much to him anymore, ya know ?)

15. I agree
I don't care who it is, but when a guy who won the lottery gets that much money stolen while at a strip club, there needs to be some jokes made at his expense. :)

16. Hello fellow Mountaineer!
Edited on Wed Aug-06-03 02:57 PM by Hubert Flottz
This guy donated a huge pile of dough to a church down the road here from me, in the part of the state where all the hype took place! The first thing the preacher at that church did was give himself a $200,000.00 a year pay raise! The story was on the news here!

Now I won't argue that the man has likely done some good things, but he did go out of his way to impress upon the national media what a fine Godly man he is! He must have just backslid for a second or too that night! Bush backslides and lies too from time to time, just for a second i'm sure!

12. gonna buy all girls on my block a color tv and a bottle of french perfume
Camper Van Beethoven/This is a great song!

Well I lost an eye in mexico
Lost two teeth where I don’t know
People see me comin’ and they move to the other side of the road
I robbed a liquor store or two
Made myself at home a few times
Borrowed myself a car when I needed it
I got me a shack at the bottom of the road
Fixin’ cars and givin’ tows
Spend all my money on the lottery
When I win the lottery gonna buy all girls on my block
A color tv and a bottle of french perfume
When I win the lottery gonna donate half my money to the city
So they have to name a street or a school or a park after me
When I win the lottery
Never run a flag up a pole
Like mr. red, white, and blue down the road
But I never called myself a hero for killing a known communist
Now I can walk into any old bar
Find a fight without looking too hard
But I never killed someone I don’t know just ’cause someone told me to
And when I win the lottery
Gonna buy the house next to mr. red, white and blue
And when I win the lottery
Gonna buy post 306 american legion, paint it red with five gold stars
When I win the lottery
When the end comes to this old world
The rights will cry and the rest will curl up
And God won’t take the time to sort your ashes from mine
’cause we zig and zag between good and bad
Stumble and fall on right and wrong
’cause the tumbling dice and the luck of the draw just leads us on
And when I win the lottery, gonna buy all the girls on my block
Silver-plated six shooters and a quart of the finest highland scotch
’cause when I win the lottery, the rights will shake their heads and say that
God is good but surely works in mysterious ways
When I win the lottery

13. Yep Sangha, you are right.........
he lives here in WV (why oh why are they always from WV?) and yeah he thanked God over and over and was going to give the to the church.....or many churches. Now THIS. Passed out drunk at a strip club and gets robbed of a half a mil!! Only in WV. But they found the dough!! Seems to me, whoever stole it could have gotten away with it pretty easy. He probably would have kept his mouth shut due to the humiliation factor and the wife would never have known. Since they have so much money. Anyway, welcome to wild, wonderful WV!!!

Well, he does like to gamble. A little strip club action would hardly be surprising either.

However, Pat Robertson may be interested in running his thoroughbreds at Whitaker's WV racetrack.

22. Sorry to confuse you oasis
but the track I was referring to is a small track for auto racing not the horses. I didn't think about anyone making that connection. Shouldn't have surprised me though after the references to gambling in the article.
