anybody catch the Daily Show tonight?

Jon Stewart did Howard Dean.

I think it was faintly supportive in a subversive way but am not 100% sure.

Any thoughts?

I do not want Jon to piss me off.

Stewart is probably the last guy on cable that speaks our language. Not sure about his production staff. but,,,

Let's see what else Jon does. He sometimes mixes it up, just for irreverency's(?) sake.

I'm sure Dean will have a chance to go on the show and hopefully be funny himself.

he already did a segment on the good doctors smile after the south carolina debate. I'm sure we all remember the "Dean vs. Kerry, who has the creepier smile?" face-off. I love Jon, but theres no excuse for scavenging his own jokes. I wish Dean would guest on that show.

on reruns - he was saying - "this guy won't back down"!!!

That didn't sound too bad.

Then he dissed Lieberman, which I enjoyed enormously.

He was mocking how Lieberman (who looked like he was about to fall asleep - does this guy EVER look like he gives a damn about anything?) saying that Dean would lead the party to the wilderness - he said, gee, that's where they are NOW... and who led them there? then posted a pic of the Gore-Lieberman campaign sign onto Lieberman's picture. I didn't see this as a diss of Gore, but of Lieberman.

So, all this sounded OK re: Dean - where was the negative stuff? fill me in, please.

with a ear-piece aside, "yes folks that is his real smile, and he did it on purpose".

He made a jibe about Dean's smile, and about him "not backing down" -- he had some good lines to use, since Dean was pretty toned down on LKL.
Nothing too negative, in my opinion.

And he went after Lieberman, that was great.

So far, Stewart seems to be taking the popular position that the Dems are like lambs to the slaughter and none has a chance. I think that will change.

There was a VERY loud cheer. He actually paused a little to deliver his next line.

Let's not be blinded by our support for a candidate, shall we? Do you know who Jon Stewart is? This issue is dear to his heart.

I've only missed a show here or there since it went on the air. You might say I am, oh, what the heck, I'll come out of the closet, a Jon Stewart fan. So yeah, I've got links to most of his interviews where he's expressed his opinions in my bookmarks.

My point was, Jon knows his audience, and the audience is a lot like us. And like us, most of them like Dean. Dean's position on marijuana is from a doctor's perspective - he has health issues. I'm all for decriminalizing it, as well, but that's not going to stop me from voting for him.

Stewart was not being pro-Dean. He wasn't tearing him apart, but I wouldn't exactly put that bit on a Dean campaign ad. Jon does the same thing to all the other candidates--there's hypocrisy aplenty from all. So when Dean is waffley on medical marijuana and gay marriage, he's going to be made fun of. That's what fake news is all about.

And since when have you thought Dean was "great"? My bad, I thought you were one who spread gloom and doom about Dean throughout the board.

Naturally, Dean is fair game along with the rest of them. But I repeat, Stewart knows his audience. And while we all laugh at the jokes, the support is clearly there.

It would be hard to guess who he would support. I really can't hazard a guess. But it's a safe bet it won't be Bush.

And BTW, Dean waffley on gay marriage? He risked his career in Vermont to support civil unions. None of the candidates have come out in favor of gay marriage, but none have done as much as he has for civil unions.

I have a thread down there somewhere where I hash out what I think about my three favorites, of which Dean is one.

Stewart is definitely a liberal, but he has sort of fallen for the "Democrats have no chance, the candidates suck". I think he'd be much more inclined to support Dean or Kucinich than anyone else. In the meantime, he is bashing away at all of them. And it's funny, even when it's a little painful.

As far as gay marriage: like other candidates, he agrees with civil unions, but won't use "marriage" or directly say he supports "marriage" because it "is tied up in religion", etc. To me that is a waffle, but as you say, it is hardly unique among the candidates. He does have a strong record on civil rights, for the reasons you mentioned.

did you catch teh Larry King Live show with Dean on it? He waffled big time - on the question of marriage.

legalizing marijuana, not for dean not backing down. In fact, Jon was being pretty sarcastic about the "not backing down".

He tends to look very stiff--maybe bring his shoulders forward, loosen his neck muscles and the smile will come across better. Right now he looks a bit nervous/awkward and I'd hate to see it used against him by the superficial press.

TDS bashes every candidate except for Edwards, unless you consider calling him "handsome guy" once in a segment where the anchor didn't remember every one's names

Edwards was also the first candidate to appear during the extended primary season, right before the midterms

I will admit that this is partly wishful thinking however.

Jon is going to bash them all. That is what he does. That is where the 'ha-ha's' come from.

It's the price for staying on air. Attacking W is permitted, provided you NEVER say anything good about the Dems. It's part of the faux right -left debate in the media: the right says GOP is perfect, the "left" says: you're wrong, they are ALL bad.
Keep it in mind before using words like "sheeple" . The faux debate fosters 2 kinds of people: ditto-heads and non-voters.

The price of staying on the air is getting people to watch. Everything is money driven, absolutely everything. If bashing Bush turns out to be profitable that's what they'll do. Jon Stewart has a niche in the market which caters to an essentially progressive audience, but, happily for COMEDY, he has an independent, irreverent streak.

Let's face it, Dean's forced grin makes him look like a dumbass and deserves to be ridiculed. It's something he REALLY needs to work on. Just like Kerry needs to pull the crow-bar he's been sitting on out of his ass, and Lieberman needs to...well...shut the hell up.

Hopefully the candidates watch Jon for tips, I bet Rove does.

Jon Stewart is going to make fun of all politicos, no matter what side of the aisle. But, I think Jon was showing that Dean isn't the radical liberal that the right is trying to paint him as.

I didn't know either of the were into that sort of thing, but I'm glad I missed it.
