Arik, King of Israel is in trouble

JERUSALEM--His fans call him "Arik, King of Israel," calling him by the modern Hebrew nickname for Ariel, and with good reason.

No one crosses him and there are no rivals waiting in the wings.

Two of his sons, Gil'ad and Omri, are haunted by police inquiries into allegedly illegal business dealings. Sharon himself is bedeviled by a multimillion-dollar loan he received from a South African millionaire--the latter to repay donations to his party primary campaign during which Omri allegedly was involved.

A highly placed party colleague predicted that "Sharon will not be able to remain in office if either or both of his sons undergo police interrogation or if they are put on trial." Sharon himself is due to be questioned, an experience that could force him to step down.

he can always retire on his fame as the builder of the Great Wall of Israel
