SCENARIO: If Dean loses the nomination, what's his future role?
Edited on Wed Aug-06-03 01:52 AM by Dob Bole
Let's assume that Al Gore enters the race, the entire Internet crashes, and Dean's entire campaign team runs away with fat stacks of cash to Mexico. Dean loses the nomination.

The Democratic Party can't ignore him because of the role he's played in bringing new voters to the polls and representing a new constituency. At the same time, the VP will likely be picked strategically for electoral votes.

What role would he play in the party?

I personally think that Health and Human Services Secy. would befit the Doctor.

1. If Dean doesn't win the nomination...
...HHS Sec. would be a perfect appointment for Dean.

In fact I could see some very good potential in the current field for Cabinet. Actually though, we can't afford to take all those great Democrats out of the Senate and House.

I'd like to see Kucinich as Sec. of Labor. :D

I'd REALLY like to see Sharpton as DNC Chair :D and Braun retake her Senate seat.

2. He'll get McCained
Whoever wins the nomination (apparently Gore according to your scenario, but let's also say Gephardt, Kerry, or Lieberman, just to cover the apparent medal stand of choices) will hold a photo op sometime close to the convention, and promise Dean supporters that the issues Dean has brought to the campaign will be addressed in a (?) administration.

Then, after November, he'll get shoved back down a hole and the Democratic Party will pray we forget he existed. (Unfortunately for Dean, his hole doesn't include a Senate seat.)

4. Role? First, To Be a Good Dem
Edited on Wed Aug-06-03 09:15 AM by UTUSN
and ENTHUSIASTICALLY endorse whoever is the nominee, and place himself at the nominee's disposal, and ENTHUSIASTICALLY ask his supporters to support the nominee, and if asked to campaign as much as possible on behalf of the nominee and other Dem candidates. Also, if asked for V-P to give it sincere consideration.

This answer would be the same for ANY of the current candidates or whatever other Dem.

(Don't know why the President GORE part of the question was put in there.)

5. Definately HSS
His energy and passion are badly needed in this country. The person who eventually gets the nomination should understand that and make him part and parcel of not only the new Dem administration but also a key figure in the campaign.

6. Hopefully spoiler
Discreditng and attacking any nominee so that the Democratic Party recieves less than 30% of the vote this time around thus destroying the current leadership and forcing a re-evaluation of the entire party down to its core values.

7. former Governor of Vermont
maybe the senate but I doubt he's interested in that and would not likely want to continue in politics.

8. I doubt Dean would be in any cabinet
I think he is only interested in the top job.

If he loses, then he will endorse the Dem nominee, he said as much on Larry King the other night.

As for his political future if he doesn't win, it's unknown. Maybe he drops out of politics and is never heard from again. Or maybe the Dem candidate loses to Bush in 2004, and Dean runs again in 2008. Or maybe Dean runs for a Senate seat in 2006, any one of these are possibilities.
