Arianna to run for Gov of Calif
I'm on her mailing list, she just sent out:

My friends,

As you may have noticed, I've taken two weeks off from writing my column.
I have spent this time meeting with community leaders and the activists
who started runariannarun.com and doing a lot of thinking -- and tossing
and turning -- about whether I should run for Governor of California in
the upcoming recall election.

During this time, I've received many wonderful e-mails from so many of you
urging me to run. Well, tomorrow morning at 10:30am at A Place Called
Home in South Central Los Angeles (a center for at-risk children I’m on
the board of; directions below), I'll be announcing my decision.

You've been reading every week my outrage at the state of our politics,
and I would love it if you could be there to join me as I make the leap
from analysis to action -- from columnist to candidate.

For those of you who are not in Los Angeles, I ask you to be with me in
spirit and I hope I can rely on your support and counsel in the weeks to
come.

Hope to see you there,

Arianna

14. I heard she used to be a Repub or something like that
this seems to prove she has less than the Dems best interest at heart.
I believe Davis should stand and fight. I believe he has a lot of support despite the early polls.

16. She was a Conservative pundit
Edited on Tue Aug-05-03 09:48 PM by nuxvomica
Appeared on a lot of talking-heads shows saying the most ridiculous things. Then she changed and I don't remember if it was the breakup of her marriage or something else. I still flinch a little when I see her on TV saying the most reasonable, progressive things. But she's a good speaker for the cause and I like her. But she shouldn't run for Governor unless she has good reason to believe Davis will go down regardless.

edit: typo.

17. Every CA DU'er who can afford it should run.
I would. Flood the ballot. Make it twenty pages long, sorted alpha (with Issa in the middle someplace and Ahnold near the end). That's what CA needs right now - a 2x4 upside the head to bring her to her senses.

20. I suppose it makes sense to fight fire with fire in this case
The GOP is making a mockerey of democracy with this recall, so I suppose the "favor" should be returned. In fact, in the spirit of that sentiment, I am pretty excited about all Californians doing so.

2. I like Arianna
I hope she wins. I still think the recall stinks and the repukes should never have gotten away with it. I just hope Issa doesn't have the fix in on the electronic voting machines. They are using them, aren't they? Issa wins, the BIG fix will happen in 2004. :grr:

5. Thank goodness
I'm glad that we have a plausible challenger. I still say don't support the recall, but having Arianna as backup is wonderful. I hope that Dianne Feinstein truly does stay out of the race now. GOOD LUCK ARIANNA!

19. There'll probably be a flood of candidates on Friday
Nobody can really guess how all this might turn out so there has to be a lot of Dems getting nervous about losing the governorship.

3. about the only thing she's ever governed is
Michael Huffington and probably her shoe collection.

Why doesn't she instead back up Davis, like the rest of us, and not use the immoral recall as an opportunity for her ego.

"Michael Huffington and probably her shoe collection."

While I can't stand Michael Huffington, your remark is total bullshit.

Yeah, all us "homos" want to ware women's clothes. What a bunch of shit.

6. I like Arianna, but she is pulling a Ralph Nader - totally self-serving
I have a lot of admiration for Arianna and am so appreciative for her outspokeness and wonderful activism work. She is a great leader in her own right, and if she wants to run at some point fine.

THIS IS NOT THE OCCASSION.

BY DOING THIS SHE RISKS CANCELLING EITHER HERSELF OR GRAY DAVIS OUT, INSURING A REPUBLICAN VICTORY.

I would love to see it otherwise, but I have looked at the options and its not the right move.

Arianna should remove the ole ego out of the picture and realize to do this, she is jeopardizing California and will most likely wind up cancelling both herself and Gray out.

This is a tremendous disservice to the RECALL. Its also I feel an obligation to remain out due to principle. This reveals to me when a person who when push comes to shove will take opportunity over the highest interest for all involved. Not good.

If she really cared California and keeping ISSA out (or whoever else), she would let go of her self serving interests and run at the OFFICIAL time just like everyone else. She can paint it however it pleases her. This is playing right into Republican hands.

8. OK...lets see if this can be explained (its been tried many times before)
IF THERE IS NO ONE ON THE REPLACEMENT BALLOT WHO CARRIES A PROGRESSIVE OR LEFT BANNER THEN ALL YOUR FREAKING EGGS ARE IN THE DAVIS BASKET AND THAT BASKET IS RICKETY AT BEST.

9. Coolness
I was going to vote for Camejo, but he said he would pull out if Arianna was going to run. That and considering that Davis has a snowball's chance in hell on 4th of July of surviving the recall or being voted in and there is no Dem to replace him, Arianna is a MUCH better choice than any Red.

"Vote NO *and only then* check my name." That should be her campaign platform... and every other Democrat should stay out.

since when is she a Dem? I don't trust her . She owes Calif an apology for her part in Michaels campaign. If she enters, Dianne should , just to take it away from her.

15. shouldn't run
She's too good at what she does now to run for Governor. We need to keep all the reasonable voices in the media that we can, and she's one of them.

22. Her winning would be cosmic justice
Don't you think that that Rove would rather still have Davis to push around, rather than someone who will _nationalize_ the campaign, and remind the cable shows every day that ENRON (and by proxy, shrub) caused California's problems. She is probably much more likely to challenge the prison state in California that Davis is.

I don't think the right wing planned on someone of her caliber running. ..
