Arianna is running?
I've been away and out of the loop, so I don't know if this is old news or not but, evidently, Arianna Huffington has decided to add her name to the CA governor race, if Gray Davis is successfully recalled.

Just got this email (pertinent paragraph bolded):

My friends,

As you may have noticed, I've taken two weeks off from writing my column. I have spent this time meeting with community leaders and the activists who started runariannarun.com and doing a lot of thinking -- and tossing and turning -- about whether I should run for Governor of California in the upcoming recall election.

During this time, I've received many wonderful e-mails from so many of you urging me to run. Well, tomorrow morning at 10:30am at A Place Called Home in South Central Los Angeles (a center for at-risk children I'm on the board of; directions below), I'll be announcing my decision.

You've been reading every week my outrage at the state of our politics, and I would love it if you could be there to join me as I make the leap from analysis to action -- from columnist to candidate.

For those of you who are not in Los Angeles, I ask you to be with me in spirit and I hope I can rely on your support and counsel in the weeks to come.

Hope to see you there,

Arianna

5. Some of her articles raised an internal set of eyebrows
Especially those that said that Dems just weren't speaking out about Bush's depraved practices, were cowardly, etc. It's fine for leftist entertainment, but it isn't the truth: plenty of Democrats spoke out at all times, both popular and unpopular, and for them to be branded with the same "spineless" epithet is always frustrating.

I don't know much about her beyond her articles, and her marriage to the Republican congressman.

13. actually, not to call them spineless would be inaccurate

Dems speak out so well, you can't even hear them...there is NO strong voice in the Democratic party as long as they're running for re-election (and even when they aren't)

You haven't been keeping track of Congress if you believe Dems have been spineless.

10. Don't know - can anyone run as a Democrat?
I mean, can any candidate just go ahead and say they are a Democrat, or do they have to get some sort of approval from the DNC or local Democrat organization?

15. You have to be registered to vote as a Democrat
There's a $3,500 filing fee and some additional paperwork if you plan to spend over $1,000 on your campaign. No other approvals required.

See http://www.run-for-governor.org

and http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/gov-qual.pdf

The more the merrier. I think.

14. What in the HELL are you people thinking!?
California's problems are NOT Davis' fault. They are the fault of Bush/Cheney, Enron, Haliburton, Duke Power, PG&E, etc. This was planned for CA right after the selection, because CA shamed Bush. If Davis loses this recall, it sends a LOUD message to every repuke out there that if they don't like the results of a FAIR election they can recall. Get your SHIT together folks, at least those of us in CA. Nuff said!

16. Bush, Cheney, et al are not running for governor
There is a very real chance that Davis will be recalled, and if Democrats can't agree to get behind ONE good candidate as a replacement IN CASE DAVIS GETS THE BOOT then it's all over.

19. It's all over if everybody gives up and runs out and votes for a "dem" ...
That doesn't have a chance of getting elected. Can you say "governor Issa?" And yes, Bush/Cheney are running for Gov, Mayor, Dogcatcher, Emporer, King, anything they can get their crooked hands on, so give it to em.

21. Hold the phone!
What's the problem with voting NO and voting for someone like her????

Sorry, but this Davis or nothing bullshit isn't cutting it anymore. Damn right this recall sucks. Damn right I'm voting a big FAT NO!!

But I'll be DAMNED if I'm not going to have some say so in the possible replacement.

It's time to wake up and smell the coffee. It doesn't look good for the governor. And no, I'm not just going to sit on my ass and watch it happen. I'm going to roll up my sleaves and work on DEFEATING this recall.

BUT, there has to be a CHOICE on the ballot and if it's Ms. Huffington, so be it.

33. Fallacy
Who do you expect the people to vote for that are voting against the recall? They can either vote for no one, they can vote for Arianna, or they can vote for a Republican. The best chance we have of avoiding Gov. Issa is to have someone for people to vote for those who want to vote "no" in the recall. If you really believe that Davis has a good chance of beting the recall, then how can you claim that Arianna doesn't have a chance to get elected? Is her presence going to make people change thier vote to "yes" on the recall, and then vote for Issa? That makes no sense.

24. My understanding is that it's a two-part proposition.
A) Up or down on recalling Davis and B) If recall succeeds, who should replace him. The party needs to be prepared but, at the same time, Dems are being exhorted to vote "No" to the first question.
