Update on US Deaths in Iraq
8/8/2003

As of Thursday, 256 U.S. soldiers have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq, according to the military.

The British government has reported 43 deaths.

On or since May 1, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 118 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq, according to military figures.

The latest deaths reported by U.S. Central Command:

A 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) soldier died Wednesday after developing a seizure in Mosul.

Two 1st Armored Division soldiers were killed Wednesday in a firefight in Baghdad.
Identifications from the military:

Army Staff Sgt. Brian R. Hellermann, 35, Freeport, Minn.; killed Wednesday when an Iraqi vehicle opened fire in Baghdad; assigned to C Company, 2nd Battalion, 325th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

Army Staff Sgt. David L. Loyd, 44, Jackson, Tenn., died Tuesday in Kuwait after experiencing severe chest pains; assigned to the 1175th Transportation Company, Army National Guard, Brownsville, Tenn.

Army Spc. Farao K. Letufuga, 20, Pago Pago, American Samoa; killed Tuesday when he fell from a roof in Mosul, Iraq.

1. I hate to say this
But regregtably the American people's support for the war in Iraq will only drop when it hits home, that is, when All American Boys start coming home in body bags. Making anti-war appeals to the "security Mom" in Macomb County, Michigan on the basis of Iraqi civilians being killed just isn't going to sell. Most Americans simply can't identify with the Iraqi victims of the war. I have long since argued that the American anti-war movement should be framed on the basis of 2 arguments: 1) the Iraq war will make us less, not more safe from terrorism, and 2) American soldiers will be killed. Morally, it would be nice if the argument about the costs of war upon Iraqi civilians could be made, but if you want to get a majority behind you, and actually change policy, arguments have to be framed for a mainstream American audience.

3. Unfortunately, you're correct
As long as this crowd has control they're going to hide the american dead coming home, unless it become a landslide of bodies, they'll blackout the news.

2. Bob Noback thinks you shouldn't talk about GIs dying!
You're being very mean to Bush when you do that and it hurts Bob Noback's corporate feewins! He screamed at the guy on the left about doing that on crossfire yesterday! I hope Larry Flynt prays for Bob and Tucker soon Before Bob beats Gawd to the punch and has a stroke on his own, while defending the national idiot! Larry Flint could save a lot of time by saying a blanket type death prayer for the entire Reich wing media all at one time!

7. Yes, Novak said they are not all combat deaths
so I guess they don't count. Tell that to their mothers, wives and children.

As Paul Begala said, "They are just as dead".

The number of wounded is also staggering.

So many ways to spin the real numbers. This really pisses me off and is precisely why Joe and Jill Murkin have no clue just how bad the quagmire in Iraq is..... :grr:

6. Further muddying the issue are the Brown and Root "civilians"
Edited on Fri Aug-08-03 09:33 AM by mistertrickster
that drive military vehicles and perform military support services. When they die, they are not counted in the death toll, I'm assuming.

Nice plan to keep the numbers down as well as funnel money to Cheney's cronies.
