New Fiore cartoon - National Parks privatization ????
Sorry for the post in the Lounge, but I don't get the new GD rules.

I just watched the newest Mark Fiore cartoon

www.markfiore.com

Is George Jr. (et.al.) actually discussing privatization of the national parks??? I hope to God that this is only whatchacallum reductio ad absurdum or whatever. If not I think I'm going to be iller than I ever imagined possible.

1. Big time privatization plans.
Edited on Fri Aug-08-03 12:32 PM by Divernan
There is a multimillion dollar "study" ordered by Bush of the impact/benefits of privatizing the national park service. Our parks are already underfunded/undermanned and slowly deteriorating for lack of maintenance/upkeep. If Bush privatizes them, we'll have McDonald's minimum wage rejects instead of trained professionals working there. The corporations with the contracts can maximize profits by doing NO maintenance/upkeep and by opening them up to all the snowmobiles, atvs, etc. Then when these beautiful, pristine sites are totally messed up, Bush can argue that we have to open these areas up to mining, ranching, logging, etc. development to raise money to pay for the upkeep.

2. It started during the Clinton administration.
Private companies are contracted to run campgrounds, fisheries etc.. I don't care how the Forest Service manages a lot of the wilderness, especially the log sales. They are not conservationists by any means.

4. Here is one article. Yes, he wants to do that.
Here is the article:
http://www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily/news/6413812.htm
SNIP...."WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - (KRT) - A pair of top-ranking former officials who oversaw public lands during Democratic administrations railed Tuesday against the Bush administration's proposal to privatize portions of the National Park Service.

By shifting selected, non-ranger jobs in national parks to private companies, the administration's plan would gut one of the nation's proudest and most popular agencies, the Democrats said....."

Here is a page with all the bad things they are doing so secretly and without public knowledge.

They have a newsletter.
