Suggestions/discussion on books related to the Mexican War & the New Deal
Hello everyone!

I have been wondering if there are people out there who have any suggestions on books one might read relating to:

1. The Mexican War
2. The New Deal

I have been getting into many of arguments as a Californian over the new wonderfully racist propositions we have on the ballot every few years here. I think learning more about how the state was stolen from the Mexicans to start with would be benficial in these discussions. I thought for sure Howard Zinn had written a history of the war, but I can't find it.

I'd also like some recommendations/discusssion on books relating to the New Deal, but not just about FDR and WWII. I'd like to know about the history of the New Deal, and how much it changed the nation. I've been listening to some old FDR speeches (wonderful!) and would like a bit more background and to learn which things stuck and which didn't.

Okay, I think that one conforms to the rules...

1. Good (but dated) General Intro on México---

"Distant Neighbors" by Alan Riding, who was the NY Times correspondent in Mexico City for a decade. When I lived in México, I found it a very accurate (from a gringo point of view) portrayal of the people and society. He does have a chapter on the war with the US, and another on the Revolution, both with an eye to their role in shaping Mexican values and reactions.
