The ultimate wedge issue: porn
Edited on Sat May-01-04 01:51 PM by ButterflyBlood
THIS is how we can win the white male vote. We need to let them all know about how Asscrack is cracking down on porn. That might bring them into our corner, Asscrack isn't pleasing anyone but the fundies and I suppose in this case the MacKinnonites (luckily they won't vote for * anyway and their numbers are so small they don't make a difference).

Have to be very careful...if one were to use this issue

edit: It doesn't help that the AIDS outbreak in the porn industry is happening right now

5. no, I doubt it
Soccer moms may not be huge fans of porn, but they don't see it the same way fundies and Dworkin/MacKinnon type "feminists" (I don't consider those two fascists to be feminists anymore than I consider Falwell and Robertson to be Christians) do.

The libertarian view works best on this, you can have your abortions, and you have can have your porn. Keeps the non-fundies of both genders happy.

11. I don't get the whole "soccer mom" demographic
What it is? Suburban women 25-45 with children? It's a big tent and there's plenty of us who are rather comfortable with this stuff.

9. Some more.
I imagine if you watch these spaces, you'll get updates on this issue:

http://www.larryflynt.com

http://www.howardstern.com

Also, find your state online sex-offender registry. Ask them if they'd like to someday maybe end up on it for watching regular porn that you can rent from the back of the video store.

6. An incestious relationship between censorship and national security
is developing. I believe BushCo will use the Iraqi torture pictures as an excuse to clamp down on the porn industry. The California porn industry is in a near panic over an outbreak of HIV within the industry and Asscroft and Powell will tag team to pander to the social conservatives.

8. It's a niche issue
You "sell it" to the men who like porn and are feeling threatened by AG Ashcroft and the other neo-Pharisees. A liking for porn cuts across all political boundaries. Not only does an erect penis have no conscience, it has no political affiliation.

It's not something for waging a public campaign. The public campaign is the meta-fear: That Ashcroft will be scrutinizing what you read because of his obsession with porn. He will violate tour privacy like the bad guys in porn violate young women's bodies.

The MacKinnonites are far less powerful than you think, and Dr. MacKinnon herself is much more tolerant of porn than her legal writings would indicate. A lot of what she's written was promoted by the right as actual proposals by the Feminist Gestapo, when they were merely theory papers. I wouldn't say that MacKinnon is pro-porn by any means, but she is the recipient of a lot of negative PR. Don't make the mistake of believing what the Right is telling you -- their agenda is not your sexual freedom.

10. You could turn it into a national security issue too.
Why is the Justice Department going after mainstream porn instead of funnelling that money into catching terrorists?

How guys feel at the prospect of losing their porn is the same as women feel about the prospect of Roe V Wade being overturned right?

:P

It's a loss of personal freedoms either way I guess.

14. I'm in a local chat room...
...and a lot of times people don't really say anything about the political issues I bring up, even the ones I think they agree with me on, but when I brought up this I got a lot of response. Even my friend who's a genuine Commentary-reading, PNAC-supporting, Leo-Strauss-knowing-about neocon is very against Ashcroft.
