Fineman: Clark vetted for Veep ("commander theme")
Thanks to incapsulated, who posted in GD2004!

"In the meantime, behind the scenes, Team Kerry has stepped up the pace of the search for a running mate. Jim Johnson, a longtime friend of Kerry's, is supervising the process, which has fully vetted two contenders so far, Rep. Dick Gephardt and Sen. John Edwards. A third is undergoing the process now, NEWSWEEK has learned. He is retired Gen. Wesley Clark—a further sign of Kerry's interest in the commander theme. And the tight-lipped Johnson, NEWSWEEK has learned, privately expressed considerable interest several weeks ago in Gov. Tom Vilsack of Iowa, who meets several veeply criteria: he's close to Kerry (having helped him win Iowa), he's Roman Catholic (which has become a major plus in national politics) and he's a geographical twofer, having been reared in western Pennsylvania, a key battleground. One insider predicts that Kerry will pick someone by the end of this month—extraordinarily early but perhaps an urgent necessity to fend off GOP attacks."

1. Finally, someone is even acknowledging
that Clark exists.

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed. Kerry/Clark vs Bush/Cheney smells like a landslide to me.

War Hero/War Hero vs Chickenshit/Chickenhawk.

2. Disappointed about Edwards...
but as much of a good man he is, I am glad Gephart is out. He's just not VP material.

3. I don't think Edwards or Gephardt has been ruled out --
they've been "vetted," and are, I assume, still under consideration.

16. I though vetted meant "taking out of consideration"
Like Bush's "vetted" documents.

10. Except for the Clark tidbit, the article was indeed typical Fineman --

4. Thanks. I don't get over to GD2004 enough.
That would be so cool if Clark (or maybe Edwards) is selected. They add interest and energy to the ticket, IMO. I can't see Gephardt doing that. And Clark makes the RWers concerned, as PigBoy once said.

7. Edwards is still very much in the running. I'm glad Kerry is vetting Clark
Kerry has to look at all the options, then make the best decision. I think he will.

15. I'm not a huge Vilsack fan. Do we need IA that bad?
Vilsack's a great Governor and would be a tremendous VP, so what's the problem? The problem is he's even more boring on the stump than Kerry is on off days. The media will try to make huge hay out of how booooooooring the Dem ticket is.

Plus, given the fact that IA has been hit hard by the chimp economy, fuel prices are killing Midwest farmers, who never liked Chimp to begin with, and we won IA last time, is the state in that much jeopardy?

I'm on the line between Edwards and Clark. Clark totally neutralizes whatever shred of credibility Chimp has on the War on Terra, but is a political novice who showed he had a lot to learn during his primary run. In an election this close, we can't afford a major mistake by the running mate.

Edwards leaves us vulnerable on the WOT aspect, but can play JFK to uncle Dick's Nixon, the fresh face with fresh ideas bit.

I think either Edwards or Clark would do much better than Vilsack.

17. One More Time: EDWARDS IS A LOUSY SENATOR!!!!
I worked on his Senate campaign, he's my senator. He's LOUSY!!! He is by far the worst senator we've ever had in North Carolina: totally unresponsive to his constituents. Very DLC in his votes, and totally ignores his State.

In fact, if people want to get anything done, they have to call Elizabeth Dole's office. THAT, to me, IS SICKENING!!!

I liked Edward's WORDS, both when he campaigned for Senate and for President. But WORDS don't mean shit. He's an empty suit.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY hope Kerry doesn't choose him!
