I've seen a few bad pics of Kerry but this isn't one of them. It's a good pic. At any rate, there are thousands of bad pics of the Shrub so Kerry is miles ahead in that regard.

9. Compared to who?
Chimp?

According to the League of American Bicyclists, nearly 1 million U.S. workers commute regularly by bicycle. The federal Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists bicycles second only to cars as a preferred mode of transportation.

Biking's growing popularity was evident during a National Bike Summit this month in Washington. Cyclists from 47 states converged on the city for three days; it was the biggest turnout in the event's three-year history.

The summit's popularity coincides with growth of the bike caucus. The bipartisan group, established in 1996, now includes more than 100 House members. The Senate has started its own group with more than a dozen members so far.

It also is good public policy, he says. In the past decade, spurred largely by the bike lobby, Congress has more than quadrupled spending on bike projects - to nearly $2 billion. That has helped build almost 20,000 miles of bike trails, put bike racks on buses and establish biker safety programs nationwide.

I have no problem with it, but I think the photos of him in hockey apparell would be received a little more warmly by red-state voters who get their rocks off on having leaders who look masculine, muscular and militaristic.

I cycle, and believe me, you don't want to wear regular shorts on a long ride. As I said in an earlier post, there are Americans unsophisticated enough to believe that cyclists are "sissies." I know a lot of male riders, and most are in terrific shape. I know a man in his 70s who just completed a six-day ride across the southern United States.

For the average guy on a bike the tight shirt, small hat and bike shorts really do a number on your dignity. I have also noticed that they are unnecessary (unless going more than 50 miles). I'll trade some chafing for not looking like a twit any day.

I consistently wear spandex shorts and cycling jerseys for either road biking or mountain biking. Why? Because of the comfort factor.

Most serious cyclists aren't out there to try and impress people with the way they look. They're out there to BIKE.

83. Cycling jerseys necessary to BIKE?
Unless you are in a race, no. The hats look really silly. I can understand the helmets and have worn them myself when cycling in an urban area or on steep trails. The shorts do help. The solution, so I do not have to look at those fools? Wear the bike shorts, and put a regular pair of shorts over them. You get the comfort and you do not look like a dork.

For those people who wear full bicycle regalia: People are laughing at you.

86. Like I care what people I don't know think about me!
The purpose of the jerseys is that they wick moisture away from your skin, unlike cotton t-shirts that tend to get completely soaked and quite uncomfortable.

Furthermore, wearing other shorts over top of your riding shorts tends to make things rather hot -- especially during the summer. I don't know about you, but living in the NE I have been riding many times when the temperature is in the high 80's / low 90's with 85%+ humidity -- and the LAST thing I want to do is to throw on an ADDITIONAL layer of clothing.

If you're so worried about people you don't know thinking you're a "dork", then you've got much bigger problems than what kind of clothes people are wearing while cycling....

93. I expect people who know me to judge me on my character...
... not superficialities like what kind of outfits I wear while cycling. And, in fact, I've had friends give me a hard time for wearing all cycling gear -- and it hasn't damaged my psyche to the point of pushing me into therapy yet.

To be quite honest, you sound like a person who worries just a little bit too much about what other people think of you -- to the point of allowing that concern to dictate your freedom in being who you truly are. It took me many years to overcome such a predisposition, and to be quite blunt, you couldn't pay me enough to go back.

96. No I will not.
I believe people in full biking regalia look deeply silly. I would be a hypocrite if I would prance about in said clothes. I think they look bad, therefore I do not wear them.

I would make an analogy to guys who put on a full professional baseball-type of uniform to play league softball. It is both unnecessary and dorky. Plus they look like total knobs when getting a beer after the game.

When biking for enjoyment or exercise you are not being competitive. You are riding an f'n bike. A full uniform is not necessary.

It is kinda like taking your glove to a baseball game. Cool when you are ten, but one hopes to have some dignity when older.

Good for you. That's YOUR choice. Others are free to choose differently, and there ain't a damned thing you can do about it!

I would make an analogy to guys who put on a full professional baseball-type of uniform to play league softball. It is both unnecessary and dorky. Plus they look like total knobs when getting a beer after the game.

Yah. Like, last week I went to the mall and I saw this guy wearing an outfit that was like, so 2002, and I turned to my friend and we like laughed at him and stuff, because he was so dorky!

How old are we? 13? 14?

When biking for enjoyment or exercise you are not being competitive. You are riding an f'n bike. A full uniform is not necessary.

It's not about being competitive. It's about being comfortable. I find your remarks amusing, because when I rode with a local cycling club -- all enjoyment, mind you -- the overwhelming majority of people in the club turned out in cycling regalia. Then again, I'm sure that all of us were simply concerned about "image", right? :eyes:

It is kinda like taking your glove to a baseball game. Cool when you are ten, but one hopes to have some dignity when older.

Funny, when I was 10, I never would have been caught in full cycling regalia because I was worried about being "dorky". Now that I'm 30, I'm more concerned with being comfortable.

Dignity has more to do with how you perceive yourself than how you worry about how others perceive you.

but even if everyone was laughing at me... why do you think that would matter? Would wearing normal shorts and a t-shirt make everyone happy? Even if that sacrificed my own comfort and health? Comfort in the ventilated and rain resistent and moisture wicking jerseys and the padded seats and ventilation of the bike shorts.

Why on earth would I wear senssible biking clothes only to cover them up with others? What's the point? To prevent people from laughing at me? LOL

good to me...I'm just trying to figure out what kind of frame he's riding. I gave up road bikes years ago...now I mountain bike and I fall all the time including several whopper face plants over the handle bars this weekend...bruised ego and sore back/butt...all part of the fun...but you only fall if somebody sees you crash...what dirt and blood on my legs?

Hee. I'll have to tell my husband that one. He went over the handlebars the other week, and he was mortified, even though he was alone. He even "hid" his injury (swollen hand) from me for a week!

I do insist that he take his cell phone with him into the woods, now that I know what kind of falls are possible out there. Dorky, I know, but he rides alone and I worry that he'll get hurt or break down and not be able to walk out before dark.

95. I used to wear my crash scars like badges of honor!
One time, I did a particularly nasty faceplant in which I actually landed "face-first" on a downslope. I went into work the next day with a black eye, scrapes all down the side of my face, and a swollen lip. I looked like I had been in a bar fight, but quickly set all of my co-workers straight and actually BRAGGED about how bad my fall was.

Looking back, I was lucky to not have had to pick teeth up off of the trail, as I remember feeling them bouncing off of rocks!

As an old HS friend of mine used to say, "Chicks dig scars!" ;-)

Exactly how would he keep himself from being photographed like this when he is riding in public? Perhaps jump off the bike, attack the photographer and smash his camera like the Bushies do?

58. Imagine Dean, Clark or Edwards in this photograph --
I'm ashamed of myself, but I agree with ringmastery. This look is foreign (in more ways than one) to, I think, a majority of Americans (unfortunately). I understand Kerry's vigor, and his desire to project it, but this picture (and the snow-boarding picture) make me think Kerry may really be out of touch. I don't think you would see, for example, Wes Clark, John Edwards or Howard Dean photographed in biking shorts and helmet. The image of the Kennedys was enhanced by their pursuit of sports most Americans did not participate in, but I'm afraid it's a new, down-home political world today. I wish Kerry would get in the White House, and then find a way to make these sports Presidential!

That's what bikers wear. Kerry brings his bike on the campaign plane and bikes as much as possible. The shirt is for a Milwaukee sports team. Spandex would be ridiculous to wear to a park, but he's going on a long bike ride. It's appropriate.

enough

we elected a c student (i dont believe he was c, if it is reported c, we can pretty well guess it was lower since nothing is accurate givin to us with bush)

someone who doesnt read

a non deep thinker

a business failure

a drunk

a druggie

because though gore was smart and knew what he was talking about and experienced, we had him running in circles trying to please everyone and how foolish was that

i am now starting to hear the same thing about kerry on media. and this is going to just feed and grow and no matter what kerry does it is going to be in critique of how he appears, not what he offers. how sad that will be to create

so

kerry be boring, be you, focus on the issues and what you need to do to fix all the ills bushco created

i dont have to have sleep with you, just want someone who thinks in the office

78. RingMaster Ringmaster, how you like to Master the Ring
Can I see a picture of you on a bike? Of anybody?

Would it look foolish? What is so foolish about that picture, EXACTLY? Please, share ALL THE DETAILS OF YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS

It's funny, you know, let's say I was one of Uncle Karl's Trained Professionals.

First, I would get myself a star. Sure, I'd be giving some money to people I hate, but it would be serving the cause of my Bushevik Masters, wouldn't it, Ringmaster...

If I was a Bushevik Operative, safe in my cushy DC office, I'd then post the most divisive threads, red herrings and nonsense to tie as many people as possible.

It would be a brilliant strategy and I would excel at it.

I would smile to my Bushevik Masters as I watched my studiously practiced and concocted RED HERRING THREADS sucker people in.

But some people might catch on to me.

What would I do then?

What should I do, were this hypothetical situation TRUE, RINGMASTER?

Please share ALL YOUR THOUGHTS on that matter, as well, when you reply.

137. Come one, get real....
we don't have the luxury of excluding votes because the voters are not pure enough. This election will be decided in large part by the middle of the road voter.

People look ridiculous in biking outfits. I bike regularly and I look like a flipping fool when I put on those pants. I refuse to wear the colorful jersees because they look so ignorant. I don't care what your politics are, no amount of "liberal" is going to make someone suddenly look dignified in a biking getup.

140. Speaking of "ridiculous"...
...your post falls into that category, IMHO.

Do you like looking at Junior in his little flight suit?

147. That is just plain ignorant.
In fact it is exactly the same type of logic Freepers use. I criticize one photo of Kerry and I must like "looking at Junior in his little flight suit." Your childish little insult is what is ridiculous.

Does everyone need to fall in line and agree that everything Kerry does is great and wonderful in order to get membership to the liberal club?
