Just on Limbaugh--Compares Abu Ghraib photos to frat stunt,
Skull and Bones initiation, totally downplaying the significance. No sense of moral outrage at all. Everyone is too worked up about this he says. Of course I pulled into my driveway and wasn't going to keep listening to hear the callers.

Check out this website from the author of Blinded by the Right. Along the left side of the page are links to various articles. This maneuver from the RWnuts is one of the articles.

I don't even think Hannity has a brain, he keeps repeating the same statements over and over. No matter what, he is always in agreement with what "ol' Chimpy" is doing. He just regurgitates what ever he hears, or halfway reads.

29. Andrew Wilkow was saying the same thing yesterday.
He's pretty much a hannity wannabe. The spin was that this is just a hazing like at a frat, which it obviously isn't. This spin is also couple with how this is getting media attention, and the media was outraged with this and not with how our soldiers were treated when they were captured. Wilkow mentioned Katie Couric for some reason, wouldn't be surprised if it was in the talking points. He also said that the media is trying to paint the entire military negatively because of this, which is obviously a straw man.

These are the major talking points I got out of this so far.

24. Jeff Greenfield said the same thing pretty much on Imus this morning.
Said "we all do things when we are young we regret, it must be hormones or pheronomes or something." He went on to say he remembered "getting so drunk he woke up in his own vomit."

Sounds to me like the same thing Rush said, so they all got their "Talking Points." Actually it's getting so "scripted" that they better watch out their game is helping reveal who the Repug/WhiteHouse shills in the media are. Jeff Greenfield. That guy that some of us many years ago used to think was credible. Ugh!

41. Selective Morality
Republicans aren't moral relativists. They are selective moralists. They believe that things are absolutely wrong, except for when it comes to them. They are of the do as I say, not as I do mindset.

Calling them moral relativists is an offense to all moral relativists.

moral relativity means that the morality of a given act is dependant upon who is the one committing it... is that not the same thing?

56. Some what nuanced
A moral relativist would look at another country practicing poligamy, for example, and say that it may be wrong in this country but their culture and morality says that it is okay. Therefor those people praciticing poligamy are not immoral.

A moral absolutist would say that poligamy is immoral no matter what. Therefor those cultures are immoral even if they don't think they are. (most conservatives, especially the fundies, consider themselves to be moral absolutists)

A selective moralist would say that poligamy is immoral no matter what. They would call that culture immoral and deride them. But if those same selective moralists practiced poligamy they would still feel like they are moral people.

Moral relativism doesn't try to justify your own actions, moral relativism is used to create understanding that other people have different moral frameworks and can therefor be moral individuals even if they behave in ways that we see as being immoral.

And, by the way, on the issue of torture most, if not all, cultures see it as an immoral act.

Yep, when rushie was a frattie, that's what the boys did to him. That's why he knows so much about this.

Now, if America decided that this kind of operation is a-ok, then we are in serious trouble. But even the boy-king was very displeased with what happened. Deeply troubled and all that. Said: "that's not America". Yet rushie says it is? Hmmm...

Just like any Commander who's underlings commit war crimes! The Nazis at the top of their chain of command didn't throw the pellets down the pipes at the gas chambers either but they were shot and hanged after the war as they should have been! I'm inclined to raise the old cry from days and deeds gone by, "Bush Knew!" Rummy even visited the prison for a photo op like Himmler did! These people are friggin' MONSTERS! The idiots in charge are a THREAT to our National Security!

Edited on Mon May-03-04 02:16 PM by enki23
based on the authoritative, and astoundingly unified testimony of so many our most esteemed conservative commentators, this is excellent evidence of the moral and ethical disgrace that is what we call "the greek system" of fraternities and sororities. based on these statements, activities at fraternities in particular are so vile, coercive and degrading that one can't help but recommend their immediate termination.

maybe rush is right. maybe frats are into torture and sexual humiliation. maybe they do things that would, outside their insular cult-like society, be considered criminal. even, in a case like this, clearly a war crime--a blatant violation of the geneva conventions.

In Pat Conroy's The Lords of Discipline, a group of cadets called The Ten ran off freshmen they thought weren't worthy to wear the ring in a wonderful ceremony: they tied you up, blindfolded you, stuffed you in a mattress cover, hauled you out to General Durrell's plantation house, dumped you in the middle of the room, stripped you naked, physically abused you, poured gasoline on you and threw lit matches in your direction until you agreed to leave the Institute.

Anyone see the similarities?

60. Frat stunts are VOLUNTARY
Does this simple fact escape people? These poor guys are under armed guard in a prison run by armed people of an alien culture who have just attacked your country and killed many people.

If a Frat stunt gets out of hand, you can leave. Sure, you'll be taunted by a bunch of macho schmucks, but YOU CAN LEAVE, and you know that there's no chance of intentional harm. These prisoners are in very real fear for their lives.

There's a letter to the editor in the L.A. Times today from some prick in Beverly Hills that ends with the frat boy line, too. Perhaps this is the big talking point.

65. Did anyone catch O'Franken yesterday . . .
when he played the clip of Rush calling ADD a myth?

RUSH: ADD, attention deficit disorder, I'm still not buying into that. And I just now created another hell storm for myself by saying that, because here come all the parents. You know, all ADD is, is parents that can't control normal kids. You know, kids have kinetic energy. They have more energy than adults. They can't stop, and it's, "No, they can't concentrate." Of course they can't concentrate. It's called discipline. Spank, one, two, three. That's going to really help me, too.

I know it's a bit off topic, but it pretty much tells you all you need to know about his sanctimonious, pill-popping brand of moral values.
