Bush spells out economic recovery plan in Michigan today
I'm not sure if Bush was kidding, or not, but it appears he has completely written off Michigan's electoral votes this year.
A quick read of todays papers shows that Michgan's unemployment rate is 6.9%. That's a full 50% above the national 4.6% rate.
Michigan has only 10 million residents, yet we have watched 300,000 manufacturing jobs leave the state (and nation) since Team Bush took charge.
Bush was describing his economic philosophy in Niles, MI today, when he basically said that the economy would be good in Michigan, if you had a 'good business climate'. OK. Two years ago, he said 9-11 was the cause of the bad economy. Last year, he said it was because of the Wall St. accounting scandal. Now, he's apparently found somebody ELSE to blame.
In case you don't already know, 'Good business climate' is Republican-speak for low wages, no worker rights or protections, and of course, NO UNIONS. Bush could not have picked a worse place to try and sell the right wing economic agenda. We in Michigan rely upon the good paying jobs that exist in our manufacturing based economy. Those manufacturing jobs tend to be the most dangerous and most difficult jobs held by workers.
Naturally, those jobs are also covered by more worker health protection statutes. The jobs also pay more, and the workers are more likely to need and demand union protections.
For Bush to come to Michigan and basically tell us that our livable wages are costing us jobs demonstrates that he is far out of touch with reality.
Like his economic advisers that think sending jobs overseas is good for America, Bush has no idea how to fix our economic problems.
Better business climate, my ass "Mr. President". We need more jobs, not less. We need jobs that pay more, not less. Your right wing Laisse-faire economics worked well for southern antebellum slave owners, but for civilized Americans, there is no room for your greed.
After Bush got through telling us our wages were too high, and that our unemployment rate was our own fault, he went on. He told us there was another reason our unemployment rate was rising. He pulled another right wing talking point out of his ass, and told us that "Tort reform" would solve all of our problems.
This guy is really out of touch.

1. Bush cannot relate to a person
who is a "worker" and does not understand the concept of "work".

3. How did it go over? Was anyone allowed to question him?
Or was the crowd loaded with corporate sponsors?

5. Don't know. I only heard a clip on the radio this morning.
My understanding is that the crowds are by invitation only (at least that's what they said about his Sterling Heights visit today).
In hindsight, are you kidding? Bush doesn't take questions from anybody.

6. Oh wait, I did hear the crowd erupt with applause after he gave
the 'tort reform' line. I guess that should answer your question about the corporations that are funding his campaign.

7. but...but...I thought the economy was
going gang-busters w/ ALL those jobs created in January. One side of his mouth says everything is wonderful; the other side has an economic recovery plan. Which is it? I gotta say if this is how a C-MBA handles economic problems...toooooo bad he didn't study.

Damn that Clinton! Leaving him an economic mess 2 clean up!

10. Economic recovery plan? But I thought the economy was booming.
Oops, I guess those booms Dubya had been hearing were the sounds of U.S. jobs being outsourced.
