Oh, the Third Reich similes just keep coming!
Edited on Tue May-04-04 05:17 PM by jmowreader
If you go to http://www.bartcop.com, you can follow a link to a slideshow at http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040503/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_abuse_reprimand_6 in which you'll see several people--a lawyer and one of the torturers' wives--claim that the soldiers were "only following orders." It also says that the "superiors" should be held responsible.

Hmm...where have I head that before? Oh yeah! Nuremburg!

Y'know, Senior Drill Sergeant Simental told us we had the duty to refuse to obey illegal orders. Apparently they have stopped giving out this tidbit of information.

On edit: fixed links.

2. It needs to go to Bush
Because he's ultimately responsible.

about how we aren't as bad as hitler. No just as overt as the nazi's goebbles work in this admin is obvious. What will it take for you to wake up, concentration camps, oh wait i forgot we already have those. An unjust invasion? oh shit, whoops. Ah well, moderates put up with it then (germany won't take this guy seriously, hes a crank, we love deutchland) some things never change.

5. I guess that would be me...
Who were the great Nazi protesters? How many would rally in the streets of Berlin to protest Hitler? I'm no * fan, but I don't see anything appoaching the level of oppression that went on in Germany happening here (not yet anyway). If Bush were just like Hitler, the DU would have been shut down years ago and all of us would be in jail or dead. He'd have complete control of the arts, popular culture, and all industry (instead of industry having control of him). While you point to the concentration camps, do you really equate Guantanamo with Thereisenstat, Daccau, and Auschwitz?

7. Industry had control of Hitler, not the other way around
Look up Alfried Krupp and the IG Farben Company.

An aside: I always get a little chill when I go down my roofing aisle. I sell GAF shingles. They are made by a company which was once known as American I.G. Chemical Company.

Then again, I shoot a lot of Agfa film and sell a lot of Bayer lawn care products--those companies were also part of the IG Farben empire.

4. I'm reminded of a bit . . .
in the original theatrical production of Lenny, the play on which the Dustin Hoffman movie on the life of Lenny Bruce was based.

In the play, there's a fantasy sequence between Adolf Eichmann, Adolf Hitler and Lenny Bruce about the need for dissenters in society.

Eichmann: "Und don't blame me, you freak! I vas only following orders, but you, you vas ordering followers!"

Hitler: "Bullshit! You can't know vhat it vas like, you had to be there! Goering vas, running around, giving himself fixes in a housedress! I didn't know vhat the hell vas going on! I asked them, 'How'm I doin', fellas?' Und they said, 'Great man, they love you!'"

Bruce: "That's right, nobody told you what a putz you really were."

Hitler: "No. I couldn't get that information!"

Bruce: "That's right, that's it --- you need the deviate, make room for the deviate, you need that madman to stand up and tell you when you're blowing it. The harder you come down on the deviate, the more you need him."
