I can assure you that Rumsfeld would not be on air parsing whether or not it was torture.

Miller would not be comparing the photos to Mapplethorp.

They would be outraged, crying torture, saying it's against the Geneva Conventions, etc. etc. etc.

What does this double standard tell us about the US?

9. Jessica Lynch and that other dude were apparently

given medical treatment and not anally raped. Besides, the question is not what they do, but what we do. We took the moral high ground to justify invading their country, and spout off about no more torture chambers etc.

2. It tells what what we have always known about the right wing
They have no problem doing immoral, inhumane things to people who are different than them.

They belive that Americans are superior simply because of the fact that they are American. They think any other life is worthless.

This is why most right wingnuts think its ok for our country to hold people indefinately without charging them with anything, to torture and brutalize our prisoners of war, and to just attack other countries on a whim. They believe it is our divine right to be assholes. They don't stop to think that such behavior could lead to negative attidutes that will eventually cost American lives.

4. Even though it sounds absurd, what you say seems to be
supported by posts over at FreeRepublic.

I was checking it out over there to see what they thought
about this matter. There were a few conscientious objects
but most seemed to ask as if this were all a "media conspiracy"
to "get Bush". Little did they seem to notice, the media actually
kept a lid on it until the power of its atrociousness forced their
hand.

Many, many less virulent Republicans just have no clue....meaning,
they subconsciously don't allow themselves to integrate the bad acts we've been doing. Their in-group/out-group bias is so extreme, they can't fathom the atrocities done from our side. In their minds we wear the white hats and all acts are done in self-defense.

5. that's basically what Mancow said this morning
Mancow, in case you are lucky enough not to get him in your area, is a Chicago-based morning radio guy. An uninformed (or perhaps misinformed), unfunny, creep. Sure, lately he bashes Dubya but only because of the FCC crap. Anyway, to get back to the point of this thread... he was saying those pictures do not portray torture and they deserved worse than that.

8. They would've been nuked
Like Native Americans and Afro-Americans, Japs, gooks, charlie, wetbacks, wops, heabs, dotheads, Arabs and Muslims (sandniggers) are not quite human enough to count as much.

That is the underlying and unquestioned mind-set

11. Why the outrage
I condemn the abuse of the Iraqi POW's and the people responsible should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. However, these are some isolated acts and don't reflect the conduct of the 125k soldiers in Iraq. While this is deplorable behavior, why did we not see the same outrage when the Iraqi freedom fighters executed the Italian prisoner? Surely the Italian prisoner suffered a far greater abuse - the ultimate war crime - than the Iraqis.

12. Because we
are supposed to be the good guys. We are supposed to be showing these people what democracy looks like.

We expect the Iraqis to torture and execute people. When they do, it's no surprise.

There is another big difference between us and the Iraqis. We have a system of laws that is far different from what exists in Iraq. Revenge seems to be one of the main "laws" that governs that country. Revenge in the form of retaliation for wrong doing is expected.

This is part of the whole problem with bringing democracy to Iraq. Democracy does not grow out of chaos. There needs to be a firm foundation of order and law and citizen participation. We can't just tell people "You're going to have a democracy because we know it would be better for you."
