The Great thing about the Ted Rall / Pat Tillman Story
It lets everybody feel self righteous.

Those who disapproved of the cartoon can feel self righteous over the obvious mocking the dead tone of the cartoon.

Those who approved of the cartoon can feel self righteous over the obvious fact that we care more about a dead football player than hundreds of Iraqi or Afghani Dead.

Alternatively you can get self righteous over the trampling of Mr. Rall's artistic freedom.

I don't want to exclude myself; I had the opportunity to write numerous self-righteous posts yesterday. That's what's good about this kind of story, we all have the opportunity to feel morally superior to our fellow Democratic Undergrounders.

2. trampling
To say his cartoon sucked doesn't trample over Rall's artistic freedom. Jesus..if Martin Scorsese makes a bad movie I'm gonna say it's bad. Does that mean that I am trampling over his artistic freedom?

6. It does if you say it shouldn't be shown
as many have done. They say their "free speech" makes it okay for them to demand Rall's cartoon be pulled. You made lots of posts about the issue yesterday, trumad, and your position is clear. But the fact is, many DU'ers demonstrated the same intollerance over this cartoon as we accuse the right of harboring. The bullshit about free speech being used to squash distribution of the cartoon is just that...bullshit. That is an INDIVIDUAL concept of "saying what I want," and has little to do with the consitutional concept of "free speech." In the marketplace of ideas, if Ted's cartoon offends too many people, he will lose readers and support all on his own. But look to Howard Stern as a good example here...the more people bitch about what he says, the more his rating go up. The best strategery in these instances is almost always to keep your mouth shut...controversy feeds the publicity that makes Rall and Stern famous, and the subject of the millions of words uttered in their defense as well as their condemnation has only helped each of them. Rall is a tremendous political writer, too. Not many people know this. His essays are some of the most powerful and thoughtful I've ever read. Silencing him, or forcing him to measure his words, would be a great loss for the left. An ability to look at the bigger picture would go a long way for many involved in these Rall threads.

10. Well...my take is is that Rall has a perfect right to post his work
just as we have a perfect right not to like it and voice an opinion about it. I think I was clear in my rants yesterday that I do not condone censorship and did not support the cartoon being pulled. AND I sincerely think that most DU'ers feel the same way. BUT it seemed to me that the folks who supported and agreed ed with the cartoon were labeling everyone who objected to it, anti-Free Speechers, which I thought was a bunch of Bullshit.

Both sides were heated and said some dumb things including myself. Democracy at work folks. MHOP

3. the Pat's brother says: "Pat isn't with God. He's fu*king DEAD !"

that just blew out bushies 'little' bible-toting hypocrites....

Although the brother's remarks were WRITTEN about in the San Francisco Chronicle, the bush* BIG spin machine stopped all coverage of the great Pat Tillman glorious GREAT STUPID WAR hero....stopped immediately....

anyone heard the brother's remarks on TV at all?

these were the remarks made at Pat Tillman's funeral, widely broadcast by the bush* PR spin machine to inspire more cannon-fodder for his GREAT STUPID WAR....

"Pat isn't with God. He's fucking dead. He wasn't religious. So thank you for your thoughts, but he's fucking dead."

if the brother had said anything at all to support bush*'s giant PR spin machine, those remarks would be on EVERY TV set in America, over and over and over....

but if you talk TRUTH to crazy-religiously-insane-reTHUGlican Americans, bush* doesn't want to hear it....so no more coverage of Tillman....dead issue...HE'S FUCKING DEAD ! is the message to all those bible-toting bush* people...including John McCain, who eulogized Pat with gushing remarks about how Pat was with God, and allusions to God supporting bush*'s crusade....

7. definition of self-righteous...the religiously-insane bush* cabal
fits this well...and the bush* big PR spin machine massive crap spewing out about both Jessica Lynch AND Pat Tillman was real appalling.....transparently designed to get more SAPS to Iraq for bush*'s cannon-fodder....Pat's brother KNOWS that Pat was taken for a sap....that bush* used the guy's Patriotism to grind him into an early DEATH....bush* wrongly used the DEAD guy to push his GREAT STUPID WAR....hey you idiots, send more of YOUR children to bush*'s GREAT STUPID WAR.....

during Vietnam, it also took a long time for most Americans to wake up...but there was a song that was blackballed and removed from many radio stations....just like Ted Rall's cartoon

"Be the first one on your block to have your boy come home in a box!"

9. To be fair
I did include myself in this analysis. But let's underline it. I apologize to you or anybody else I may have offended with my comments on this story yesterday. I was being self righteous and that's not a quality I like showing. I'm sorry.
