Report Warns of Infiltration by Al Qaeda in U.S. Prisons
By ERIC LICHTBLAU

WASHINGTON, May 4 — Groups promoting extremist brands of Islam have gained a foothold in American prisons, and counterterrorism officials believe Al Qaeda are likely to try to use the prisons "to radicalize and recruit inmates," according to a Justice Department investigation.

In a report from the Justice Department inspector general's office, investigators said safeguards were so loose in the 105 federal prisons that inmate chapels "remain vulnerable to infiltration by religious extremists." A copy of the report, to be released on Wednesday, was obtained by The New York Times.

The investigation grew out of concerns among members of Congress that groups training Muslim chaplains had terrorist ties and were breeding extremism. But the investigation found that the problem of "radicalized" prayer sessions was less a reflection of the chaplains than of unsupervised inmates who were allowed to lead their own worship meetings.

"Too many opportunities for abuse of this practice exist," the report found....

2. Well, if the Christians can brainwash prisoners,
why can't the Muslims? Could...should...would... well, where's the evidence? Ah, just like all the other "evidence" used to incite fear in the general populace.

Can you say "projection" of what you'd LIKE to do to them? I knew you could.

4. Muslims fought hard for their rights in american prisons, they won't back
away without a huge fight. In fact, because of the work they did in the 70s to ensure muslim inmates have the right to practice their religion, other religions have benefitted, particularly wiccans and pagans.

5. Tell me this is not turning into a religeous war
if it is not already.
If I were poor, uneducated and incarcerated maybe I would be angry and receptive too.
This is not something that will be easy to control - if it is true.

7. it already is...

"faith based" is OK if it's the right faith. Have to send these folks to that Christian prison in Florida if I remember the article that I read a few days ago. I'm being sarcastic.

excerpting:

Hard time will soon be hallowed time for nearly 800 Florida inmates who will be given the option of repaying their debt to society in the nation's first prison dedicated entirely to faith-based rehabilitation programs.

Gov. Jeb Bush made the surprise announcement Friday at a White House-sponsored news conference in Tampa that spotlighted President Bush's attempts to give religious organizations a greater role in solving social problems.
