What happened to Bush's "brown people" quote about Iraq?
The statement he made at the end of the press opportunity with PM Martin of Canada last week? Did it get mocked on The Daily Show? Or has it gone down the memory hole?

2. Some many idiotic statements, so little time
Edited on Wed May-05-04 04:02 PM by RobertSeattle
I'm not sure if Daily show mocked it. Some bloggers really took him to task on yet another stupid statement from GW. "If you criticize GW's handling of Iraq you are racist"

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/04/20040430-2.html

Bush 04/30/2004:
"There's a lot of people in the world who don't believe that people whose skin color may not be the same as ours can be free and self-govern. I reject that. I reject that strongly. I believe that people who practice the Muslim faith can self-govern. I believe that people whose skins aren't necessarily -- are a different color than white can self-govern. "

3. You mean this quote?
He said, and I quote:

"You know there's a lot of people in the world who don't believe that, that people whose skin color may not be the same as ours can be free and self governing. I reject that. I reject that strongly. I believe that people who practice the Muslim faith can self-govern. I believe that people whose skins aren't necessarily, you know, are a different color than white, can self-govern. "

I e-mailed that to probably 30 or 40 media outlets and I got nary a response, and the only thing I saw was that the Washington Post (I think) had a little blurb on it the next day. But nobody else then reported it.

With all the scandals, it's hard to keep up

9. "skin color different than OURS" . . . as my daughter pointed out, I
thought we were supposed to be a 'melting pot.' What color is an American? GW apparently believes it's white European.

What a dumbass . . .

5. Down the Memory Hole of Orwellian Occupied Imperial Amerika
Orwell was wrong by only 17 yeras. Imagine being that prophetic and smart! That man was a God, and he'd be in Gitmo right now, was he criticizing the Busheviks like he used to criticize the Bolsheviks.

8. Will's article was thoughtful and thought provoking
I will we could argue about the issues he raises in the last half of the column instead of trying to decide who is racist. he got Bush good but had to get a dig in at dems. Which was totally undeserved given the context.

13. You're right. That was an unusually good piece by Will.
He said exactly what is deeply wrong with it, besides the unthinking underlying assumption that "we" are "white":

"Scott McClellan, the president's press secretary, later said the president meant only that "there are some in the world that think that some people can't be free" or "can't live in freedom." The president meant that "some Middle Eastern countries -- that the people in those Middle Eastern countries cannot be free."

"Perhaps that, which is problematic enough, is what the president meant. But what he suggested was: Some persons -- perhaps many persons; no names being named, the smear remained tantalizingly vague -- doubt his nation-building project because they are racists."

and democracy. Don't have a link, but the repubs are reading from the same script.

11. Sometime this week bush again, referenced people by....
race, calling on 'my Latino' friend on TV, blah. blah. blah. When is smallman bush going to address Sleeza and Colon as my 'negro servants.' How about Wolfowitz, Peal and many others as my good Jew, just like Nixon called Kissinger.
