Village Voice: "The Divine Calm of George W. Bush"...
So Iraq's a mess and half the country hates you. Just keep praying.
The Divine Calm of George W. Bush
by Rick Perlstein
May 3rd, 2004 9:30 AM
http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0418/perlstein.php

"This belief among his followers is another element behind Bush's apparent imperturbability. His signals to them have produced a mass of people who unequivocally embrace the notion that their president was given to them by Providence."

The article mentions Jennifer Shroder, a "California housewife and religious-right activist" whose web site "blessedcause.org" features an article called:

"President Bush, National Hero" with a painting of the president alongside the ghostly figures of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, who rest their hands upon his shoulders, heads bowed. A halo of light emanates from Bush's head; in intersection with the horizontal of the presidential lectern, it appears to form a crucifix."

Author Rick Perlstein informs us that "the painting comes from a another website, presidentialprayerteam.com, through which 2.8 million members receive daily instructions on how to coordinate prayer for the president."

...and he concludes with:

"No, President Bush feels little reason to doubt. "It's different from, say, Dick Nixon," says Lyn Nofziger, "who was putting on a brave front but knew underneath he was wrong—that he was doing things that if he ever got caught he would be in trouble. I don't think this guy thinks that. He thinks he's doing the proper thing."

9. They sell it for a "suggested donation" of $35
"Featured Product!
This numbered collector's lithograph titled "Praying for Peace," by Ron DiCianni, features two of our best-loved Presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, praying on each side of President Bush. It dramatically reminds us of the importance and power of prayer for our leaders. Only 2,500 prints in the series.
Title: Dicianni numbered Praying For Peace lithogrph
Author/Info: Ron DiCianni"

...which means if you are moved to do so, you can "donate" MORE than $35...much, much more.

3. It's a cult.
When that many people worship an individual who thinks he is being directed by God, it's a cult, not a political party. That's why his poll numbers aren't down in the 20's.

7. And how do you run against this guy in a political race?
There are no arguments, no proof, that Kerry/Dems can put forward in this contest.

No matter the issue, Bush wins because he is carrying out a divine mission.

It gives me the creeps!

6. A religious fanatic is
dangerous regardless of which religion he/she belongs to. I'm not completely convinced that Bush isn't just using the "born-again" routine just to kiss up to the religious right, or if he really believes it. Either way, given that he controls the biggest arsenal in the history of the world, it makes him more dangerous than your run-of-the-mill serial killer.

8. This is a cult. Let's get this straight. THE sumbitch AIN'T JESUS.
He is a human being with a very questionable theology. Just because all you folks are praying for him doesn't mean that he makes the right decisions.

You shall know them by their fruits.

What is the matter with these people?

10. I checked out the blessedcause site and guess what?
The headline article says that America has forfeited its right to be in Iraq!

Even the fundamentalists want us out of Iraq. This is Chimpy's absolute core. I wonder how he'll spin this?

17. Bet you didn't know that God runs Google
it's true - the lady's website says so!

http://www.blessedcause.org/BlessedCause%20Exclusives%20II/All%20Things%20in%20Christ.htm

I suppose that means the 'miserable failure' Google search pointing to Dubya's biography is ordained by God too.

20. He appeals to folks looking for a "plastic Jesus" to put on the dashboard.
I understand some of these folks. They can't handle a complicated thought, they think TV is ruining their kids, and gays are jumping out of the closet to attack them or their kids. They hate American Media/Corporate Culture (which is where I could sympathize with them) but instead of trying to work to fix all this, they look for the "plastic Jesus" to do it for them.

They don't have the ability to find a way to change their circumstances and where they live, it's too hard to become "upwardly mobile." But, the RW and Bush have "empowered them" and so they will be eternally grateful in their churches and at the voting booth.

Some of their relatives have made more money. And so they can give more "bucks to Bush" but making money and understanding about money and American Culture in the Bush years are two different things.

:-(
