Guns in Public - Pro or Con?
SPRINGS COUNCIL MAY REINSTATE FIREARMS BAN IN CITY BUILDINGS

Rocky Mountain News, Saturday, August 9th.

<snip>

Council members voted only a ew months ago to allow people to carry weapons openly in city parks and public buildings. Now they're poised to vote on Tuesday to reinstate the bans in City Hall and other city buildings.

<snip>

"Basically, this man isn't doing anythinig illegal," said Councilman Randy Purvis. "He's carrying a long gun, and while it makes people uncomfortable, it's not illegal to possess a firearm."

<snip>

Even council members who identify themselves as gun rights supporters are planning to vote in favor of the ban. "What do we do to encourage people to be involved in city government when . . . they have to sit next to a guy with a gun on his lap?" asked Councilman Scott Hente. "To me, it's not a constitutional argument, it's a question of what's appropriate."

So, whatdya think? Should the council have the right to ban firearms from THEIR place of work, while the rest of us have to put up with it, or should they be forced to sit in their own bathwater?

1. huh?
any private building / business can ban firearms on their premises, can they not? I see it all the time here in Texas, many buildings are listed as off limits even to certified concealed handgun owners...

Not having guns in a PUBLIC office is just good sense, how could one vote to allow them into a government building?

3. Why must a gun be concealed?
For guns to be a true deterrence they should be openly displayed. Am I wrong or does thinking everyone has a gun concealed the best route.

I personally like the Old West rule that all the real men wore holsters and walked around with them and only churches and a few other places were all off limits.

Why didn't women wear holsters in the old west?

8. Not fashionable
"Why didn't women wear holsters in the old west?"

Holsters don't look good with bustles and hoop skirts. Instead, ladies wore concealed pistols sewn into their dresses.

4. Ask The Gun Lobby
They've greased the palms of the Republican lawmakers here in Colorado to loosen up the gun laws, removing local control and imposing a one-size-fits-all statewide standard that applies to Downtown Denver (pop. 2 million) as well as Spitoon Gulch (pop. 2).

Think of THAT the next time someone says that we Democrats should fall in line behind the NRA.......

6. Well, then I reserve the right to carry a sword in the open,
or why don't I just string some grenades on my belt, or maybe better than that I could strap dynamite on myself, all out in the open of course.

17. CO, The right to keep and bear arms is one way citizens exercise their
inalienable right to defend self and the Democratic Party Platform recognizes that right.

Does our Platform follow the NRA or is the NRA just using a Democratic plank against those Democratic candidates who ignore our party platform?

2. Of course.
A few days ago a New York City councilman was shot and killed inside City Hall. The killer had been waved around the security checkpoint by the victim, a political rival.

Firearms should be banned in all public buildings, including schools and courthouses, except for police and other authorized security personnel.

10. NRA propaganda. This is not a fact but a myth.
I don't want to live anywhere my kids and grandkids have to see armed people walking around without credentials and a uniform.

12. I grew up in gun country.
Was legal to pack heat as long as it was in a holster on the hip! I'd go to high school with a shotgun, 30-30, .22 plinking gun, and fly rod in the rack and .38 under the seat. Also wore a buck knife on my belt. My arsenal was the norm! Its all about personal responsibilty! PS - The shotgun was for quail. The 30-30 was for deer. The .22 was for target practice (cheaper bullets) and the .38 was for the "coup de grace" when dispatching a buck! The knife was for skinning game and gutting fish!

13. Well, until you can keep your peer group personally
responsible, then we need laws. Inner cities are well armed and young people, many of them innocent bystanders, are murdered on a daily basis. So if you can police this, then have your guns. Up until then we need laws and an unarmed civilian public.

15. So, it's OK for legislators to ban guns in THEIR workplace -
But the rest of us have to be prepared to "duck and cover" when we take our family to the park for a picnic? Guns are currently allowed in parks.

How is that fair?
