PETA's new target: Michael Moore
PETA says Moore’s size a weighty issue

By Jeannette Walls
MSNBC
Updated: 9:30 a.m. ET May 06, 2004

Michael Moore is making headlines with his controversial documentary, but one group is targeting the filmmaker for his waistline.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has selected the gadfly filmmaker as one of its “Flab Five” and is treating him to a Veg Eye for the Fat Guy makeover. “Looks like the ‘Downsize This’ author has been doing too much supersizing,” notes PETA.

“We’ll be sending him a nice little care package, a makeover kit filled with health and diet tips, PETA’s vegetarian starter kit, and suggestions on how he might change his lifestyle,” PETA’s Michael McGraw tells The Scoop.

American Idol winner Ruben Studdard is also getting targeted by PETA. “If ‘The Velvet Teddy Bear’ doesn’t want to become known as ‘The Velveeta Teddy Bear,’ he might want to idle his meat and dairy intake,” notes the group.

I wonder if anyone ever told these guys that they would attract more flies with honey instead of vinegar. Pissing off overwieght people may not be the best strategy.

31. I agree.
I would almost swear PETA was really a group set up by the beef industry to make animal rights advocates and vegetarians look bad, if it weren't for the fact that they have actually done some good regarding how animals are treated.

If he were to die "suddenly" of a "heart attack," it wouldn't look suspicious.

I saw him on his book tour in Santa Barbara. He's lost like 50 pounds since Bowling for Columbine.

36. I just saw him two weeks ago in NYC
and he did look like he lost some weight, but he also didn't look very healthy either.

I don't know if that's how he always looks or if it's something recent, but the point is that Michael Moore's weight is his own business and not PETA's.

6. So, does this hurt or help Moore?
But why pick on ANYONE because of their weight. If they want to help animals, they should target all their animosity at beef industry boot-lick George Bush rather tahn fat guys who are trying their hardest to get him out of office.

Always afraid to say it, becaause I too love animals. But they offend me with everything they do.

Hey chickens are not equal to human beings in concentration camps.

Indefensible extremism in my opinion.

...at least in the past couple of years? I even know strict Vegans who think their tactics are some of the most idiotic wastes of time and money imaginable.

Don't they realize that they don't covert anyone to their cause with these ridiculous publicity stunts?

11. Sigh.
I hate PETA, and I'm a vegetarian, so I should be their natural constituency.

Yes, people tell them they would catch more flies with honey, but they don't want to catch flies, they just want to make watch them as they pretend to collect flies so people will give them lots of money and power to catch flies and they can use that money to pretend to try to catch more flies so they can get even more money and power. It's all feel-good ego shots for them.

Someone will defend them, though, and claim that we just don't understand, and they are winning the hearts of Americans even though they are repulsing the majority.

Sigh. So much intolerance of differences, from people who generally call themselves liberals.

16. PETA idiots. I've known several OBESE vegetarians.
I don't know if they were lacto-ovo or vegans, but many of the vegetarians I've known have carried some extra pounds, and 3 in particular were enormous.

A sensible diet, with or without meat, is the key to health.

Maybe one day PETA will realize they are harming the cause of animal rights far more than they are helping.

21. Very extreme in their hiring practices as well
They use these famous faces to push particular issues but don't care if the spokesperson doesn't go along with the rest of their agenda as long as they don't sabatoge the particular issue they represent.

However, having interviewed with them a number of years ago when they moved their offices to Norfolk, VA I know that in order to be hired by them you have to subscribe to "every single" one of their beliefs. Don't agree with even one position and you can forget about being considered even further.

I understand that to a certain extent but it seems false to demand 100% purity to your cause from your office drones but not from the people that you use to promote your campaigns and become the real symbols of your organization.

27. I've heard this...
but I guess they're willing to make some exceptions (off the record). PETA is not in favor of animal testing, and (as I understand it) strongly discourages the use of any medication that was derived from it. But one of their executives had diabetes, and is taking medication derived from animal testing. Has anyone else heard about this?

Why must you contiue to be so obnoxious?

When even the far left think you are a joke, then perhaps it is time to re-examine your actions.

24. Oh gimme a break
so this guy has never seen a fat vegetarian? If there is one so-called 'far-left' group that gets on my nerves, its the animal-rights muppets. There is a bunch of these wankers trying to close down a new animal holding facility being built here in Oxford, and I can tell you they are making life hell for most science students with their antics. Thing is, no-one I know actually opposes ethical treatment of animals. Its just that 'ethical' tends to include 'saving human lives' and 'feeding people' in my book...
