Call on the White House to release records of the Energy Task Force
America's national security and economic interests are dramatically affected by events in the Middle East and by U.S. policies that impact our dependence on foreign energy sources. The development of a new comprehensive U.S. energy policy is a vital national security issue which should be debated publicly. Lobbying activities by energy companies with major financial interests in this new policy must not remain secret while our nation is at war.

To: President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney
As citizens concerned about our nation's security, our economic health, and our reliance on foreign energy sources, we object to the secrecy with which the White House Energy Task Force has developed recommendations for a new American energy policy. We are worried about the kind of access and influence that large energy companies with significant financial interests had in the development of this new policy.
The American people have a right to know about all aspects of American energy policy at a time when the OPEC nations limit supply in a way that keeps oil prices at extremely high levels. The American people deserve a spirit of shared sacrifice and commitment from all fellow citizens, including CEOs and government leaders, when our soldiers face enemy fire and our economy faces economic challenge.
We therefore call on you to immediately end this secrecy, make public all information that relates to the energy task force, and allow the American people to make informed judgments about policies so central to our national security and our national interests, in a spirit of shared mission and shared sacrifice while our country is at war.
