How will Rumsfeld go?
What will happen to Donald Rumsfeld as a result of the whole prison abuse issue?

The way I see it, there are three and a half options.

1) Bush can fire Rumsfeld. Not likely, in my opinion, because of political ramifications: it's a major admission of failure not just by some administration figure but by the President himself. Of course he can deliver rhetoric saying he feels sorry for the people who suffered, but actually following up and firing a powerful member of his cabinet (which he's only done once before) is a completely different issue.

2) Rumsfeld can resign. While this would seem to be the reasonable course of action politically, Rumsfeld is a powerful guy, not a rational one. I wonder if he would actually voluntarily leave his position as one of the most powerful policymakers in the Bush administration while it has a chance of being reelected (which, unfortunately, it does). This would still be an admission of failure, although it would not reflect so heavily on Bush the person as would being fired by Bush.

3) Rumsfeld can stay on, at least until the end of Bush's term. Doing so would maybe project confidence, but he's also becoming unpopular in Congress and the whole issue could continue to gather force and truly harm the administration politically. On the flip side, if Bush is reelected, the gamble pays off for Rumsfeld and he gets to stay on and be a powerful Secretary of Defense.

What happens? I say #2.

1. Kicking and screaming.
He won't resign and he won't be fired. He's one of the big players in the kabal.

3. He won't be leaving any time soon....

These people are so arrogant that they'll just spin, spin, spin until people don't know what the hell is going on anymore. They'll just let this pass through a few news cycles until something else takes over, and then Rumsfeld will go about his business. Remember the calls for Condi to resign? Do you hear those any more? Of course you don't, because we're on to Rumsfeld, and next month it'll be someone else. This happens EVERY FUCKING TIME. These cretins just hang on until it goes away.

9. #2 after a meltdown on camera
I know he is going to try to schmooze his way tomorrow, as his bootlicker Victoria Clarke said today he has "a logical explanation". It's worked before, but times have changed. I remember when his press conferences were called "the Rummy show" and the washington press corps were mesmerized by him. They would be laughing as Rummy let loose one witty comeback after another, it made me sick. I wonder if that same press corp feels like pimps now for letting Rummy screw this country. I never thought he was funny or clever. I saw a smirking, grinning ghoul who would pause a few seconds during his comedy routine to mention the casualties. Yeah, he was a Media Star even People magazine said he was "sexy" :puke: I could only get through the press briefings if I pictured him as his true nature, the grim reaper of death. So Rumsfeld to me will always be dressed in hooded black and holding a scythe.
