I wasn't starting this thread to be flippant or humorous. I realized on some threads people were referring to it as TORTUREGATE and frankly I think to do that minimizes this since it is so much bigger than some petty bullshit political scandal.

What I wanted was a name so that the short-attention span theater can easily call back up the images and shame of this episode with a word..and not a word like "gate" that makes this seem or blend into everything else.


So to those that might have thought I meant this as a wisecrack..I really didn't and it wasn't my intent to minimize.

People use words to generate images. I feel there should be a few short words to immediately recall these images and what they SAY about US (the collective US)without MINIMIZING it to "just another scandal."

When one say AUSCHWITZ..images occur with that name that do not occur with something such as PRISONGATE.

Mental torture maybe but nothing I saw had the flavor of physical torture. That of course is only my take of this news frenzy.

while you're handcuffed and your head's in a hood and you can't move for hours and somebody you can't see if spanking your ass and laughing and taking pictures.

Boy, talk about a Freudian slip. Humility is being self-effacing. Maybe you just thought they had accepted that they were inferiors, and thus acceded to our whims. I don't think so, though, I just think you're a little English-challenged.

We've talked about this on other threads, but the bottom line (ha ha ha) is this: those people--and yes, they ARE people--thought their lives were in peril. They may well have thought--as most sane people would--that the fact that this was going on made it an almost certainty that they'd be killed, since nobody'd ever want witnesses to this kind of thing. They might also have thought and may still think that their fellow detainees would kill them to avoid the degradation of survivors knowing about this. This was horrible, and they were probably in abject terror, literally fearing for their lives.

People who minimize this have a hidden agendum, and they betray both that and a sociopathic dismissal of others.

Don't even TRY to minimize what has happened here. Bottom line: ILLEGAL, IMMORAL, INHUMANE, and against every possible code of human decency. "Mental torture maybe"--and somehow "mental torture" is kinder, gentler than "physical torture"? And don't forget: the pictures we have seen represent the tip of the tip of the iceberg. If this is your idea of nothing more than "humility" ( :wtf: ) I invite you to go back where you came from--the company of dittoheads who in their IGNORANCE call this "a molehill". If it's "a molehill," "a fraternity prank," why is the rest of the world so OUTRAGED? This is one of those things that is NOT GOING TO GO AWAY, no matter how much you want to minimize it.

But I certainly won't try to paint all soldiers or Americans with this crime. This is a good time to poke around into the treatment of prisoners by ALL nations...not just the USA.

The people that perform this abuse need dealt with not we that condemn it.
