"It's a shutdown. We want attention," said Sandy Tyson, who has been hauling cargo from the Hampton Roads, Va., port for 14 years.
"The truckers here do not have a voice."
Independent truckers handle about 80 per cent of the cargo at the port but the initial impact of the boycott was not immediately clear. The port has terminals in Norfolk, Portsmouth and Newport News.

The Bush I administration's stated objective in their Gulf war was to protect the flow of Mideast oil to the U.S. and to prevent Iraq from obtaining a seaport from which Iraqi shipments would supposedly depress an already sputtering world market.
The nation's reward for the blood and sacrifice of our men and women in the armed forces in the first Gulf war was a further decrease in production by the Mideast oil giants under OPEC- the group which controls around half the world's oil trade. That resulted in the doubling of U.S. oil prices from $20 a barrel to $40 ($1 more than we pay now), and the fostering of a crippling recession.
Oil profits for industry CEO's and administration shareholders must have soared. No sacrifice there.
What happened to the deal between Bush and Bandar to lower oil prices? There never was a deal. The two former oil executives that the clueless working-class republicans voted for in the last election don't care a wit about the cost of gas. Bush and his Commerce Secretary have been pushing oil since Bush was wallowing in Harken Oil and Don Evans was a wildcatter. Yee Ha!
What's really the deal behind the high oil prices? I thought the effort by Saudi Arabia to tighten supply fell apart in the face of resistance and complaints from buyers like Japan. Who's gouging us? How are they getting away with it?
