Let's put that in perspective. How long did it take Howard Dean to reach that $40 million mark? Certainly longer than one night. And we know it could'nt possibly have been $20 donations...they wouldn't have had room to put that many people in the building. So, money wise, we are up against a blitzkrieg. However, if we spend too much time just trying to keep up with the Repubs raising money, we will forfeit the time we can spend on the issues that we should be talking about. It's a balance we have to be aware of..

1. I think we knew this going in...
We pretty much assumed that Bush would have a nearly inexhaustible supply of funds for this election.

That's why our advertising, etc., must be much more efficient, because no matter how much Kerry can raise, Bush can likely raise more.

2. No wonder the Jerk thinks he is invincible!
Every time I hear news like this it makes me even more convinced he feels that he is the pResident only of the top economic 1% and of Saudi Arabia. There cannot be THAT much money floating around, can there? Doesn't some of this have to be comning from overseas? Thanks Bandar. (his name always sounded like a bad science fiction movie villian)

3. Doesn't seem possible in a legal sense.
At the max 2,000 there would have to be 19,500 donors in one night.

10. see, this is what I can't get explained to me...
Which is exactly what you point out.

I think I understand about the bundling (the Pioneers, etc.), but nothing is infinite, not in this sense. How may people are giving to Bush that haven't yet and will, and CAN fork over those personal limits?

I would very much like to know, because otherwise, this all sounds like another version of CREEP, 30 years later...

7. Bush is burning campaign funds almost as quick as the Treasury.
An interesting parallel.

8. How to donate $100,000
You own some big business that benefits from Bush policies... you give your 50 top managers a bonus of $2500 each and (nudge nudge) mention you're going to the Bush Fundraiser in a week and that you're bundling donations. The employee takes the hint, writes a check to the campaign for $2000 out of his personal account, and you fill in your company/industry name in the memo section on the 50 checks and give it to the campaign. Bush pushes through more executive orders or legislation to further benefit your industry. Repeat as necessary...

Is it legal? Not really... is it provable? Probably not. Is it going on? Obviously.

<snip>
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush helped the GOP raise at least $38.5 million Wednesday at its annual gala _ all of it in donations limited in size _ and smash a one-night record set when political parties could still rake in large corporate contributions.

The Republican National Committee can spend the money as it chooses, from general party get-out-the-vote efforts to direct support for Bush's re-election campaign and GOP candidates down the ticket.

Bush, the keynote speaker, took the stage and shook the hands of several major RNC fund-raisers, including boxing promoter Don King, who waved two American flags. Bush thanked the crowd for setting a record.
