7. I feel sorry for that girl.
She hugged the only person responsible for her mother's death. She should've asked him why he didn't do anything about that PDB in August of 2001 and also why he ordered FBI's John O'Neal to stop the hunt for Bin Laden in March of that year. Fucking bastard!

drove the plane into the WTC tower? Seems like the terrorists are responsible for her mother's death.

21. OK, I'll bite
Wasn't it GW Bush who received countless warnings concerning imminent terrorist attacks to be carried out on US soil and did (as far as anyone can tell) absolutely NOTHING about these warnings? The air force was not on high alert, even though senior administration officials had stopped flying commercial airlines as early as August due to "unspecified threats".

Bush and co. keep telling us they did not have enough information to prevent 9-11, but they never tell us, specifically what they WERE doing to TRY and prevent 9-11. Maybe because they weren't doing much of anything at all, other than preparing plans to invade Iraq?

Given all this, don't you think Georgie bears some responsibility for allowing 9-11 to happen. Oh of course not; he never makes mistakes. Or at least, he can't think of any just now...

Did you read what I wrote? Bush was warned about 9/11. Repeated times. And go to www.rememberjohn.com and find out more about why Bush told FBI's John O'Neill to back off Bin Laden.

He might as well just say, "it's all about me." He is one sick f*cker - that's all I have to say...that - and he really needs to work on that emotion stuff...he doesn't do it very well. Looks more like he is supressing a giggle or a fart...

24. It was an incredibly nice thing to do...
It showed a side of the man we don't really ever see, and reminded me of the photo in my sig. Too often young people who don't understand why things happen or the ramifications of things that they have no control over.. and nothing makes one forget better than a simple hug. One of the best things George W. Bush ever said was either on that night, or in his joint session of Congress speech when he asked parents to hug their children.

I hate him as much as any of you - but he did do the right thing here. He could have laughed in her face and continued down the line. This girl and her father were probably greatly comforted by one small gesture by a man who definitely has other things, though maybe not as important, to do with those thirty seconds.

Don't forget that people died on 9/11 - healing is necessary. Until we can heal those wounds, the level of hope for being released from fear is stagnant at best. We're so quick to point fingers and seek revenge instead of taking the time to gather ourselves and make an effort to

The United States needs one big hug, but not necessarily from George W. Bush.

It's rare for something I read on DU to aggrevate me...I have to admit I was a little disappointed by the tone and content of some comments in this thread.

25. OMG, Oddman! That is perfect!
Bush isn't a serial killer; he's a mass murderer. Let's keep our definitions straight, can we?

Bush can be pretty quick on the uptake when it comes to a photo op. Karen Bigfoot Hughes must be positively giddy tonight.

...but he does care as does John Kerry...

...that said once this event had happened I'm sure his "people" made sure this picture and the story got plenty of coverage, but then the same would be true of Kerry in the same situation

29. Who the hell are these people who insist that Bush* is a 'caring' man?
- This was a staged photo op. A voice cried out from the crowd pointing this girl out. I wonder who that might have been? A member of the Bush* team roaming the audience for just such an opportunity? You can count on it.

- I can't believe some are so gullible. This sociopath doesn't go ANYWHERE unless there's a room packed full of supporters and manufactured photo ops.

- There is a REASON why Bush* appears ONLY in front of his fawning fans. This gives the appearance that he's a 'man of the people' and that his opposition is so few they're not even worth mentioning.

- Every despot and dictator in history used this same gambit.

34. Exactly. If it wasn't staged, she would not have been allowed near him
"for national security reasons." In the photo of Kerry with that little girl, he looks comfortable and relaxed. Bush looks like he is trying to conjure an emotion, a fake tear, anything that will come close to mimicking feelings. If the moment were real, would he not been looking down at the child instead of at the damn camera?

To be granted the privilege of being in his presence requires passing a screening process to confirm the proper level of adoration, worship, and loyalty.

35. Changed my mind.
Saw a clip of them on FAUX. There's an obvious difference between a setup photo-op and finding something good someone did and milking it. It's unclear which this is. They are Bush supporters and you don't get to be at teh front of those lines unless you're invited. I didn't consider that.

I will say that it was the best photo-op yet, and I stand by my desire for a national hug damnit!

Photo-ops and talking points ARE politics. That's life and it sucks. :(
