Anyone else shocked by Gov. McGreevy's being deemed unfit for communion?
Does the church really think McGreevy's positions are a scandal? Or do they hope the faithful are more scandalized by McGreevy's opinions than they are by the the church's positions on sexual abuse of parishioners?

I sincerely apologize to any Catholics if you are offended by this, but I'm offended by the cowardice of Catholic bishops in NJ.

Edited on Thu May-06-04 11:38 PM by beyurslf
Or do those rules only apply to Dems?

Of course, Gov. Sebelius of KS is Dem and pro choice too (and Catholic).

9. Just Republicans.
There's talk that Kerry may not be invited to the annual Al Smith Dinner in October. Wonder if Pataki will be. We KNOW Bush will be, that freakin' infidel!

6. He supports abortion rights and civil unions for gay couples
among other shockingly non-Vatican positions. The Vatican made a statement a couple of months ago that Catholic politicians who took "anti-Catholic" positions were not fit to take communion. So the Bishop of Camden, where McGreevy has been going to mass, announced that the Governor was not welcome to recieve communion there anymore. McGreevy has said he would respect the Bishop's stand and not receive communion there, but he reaffirmed his support for abortion and gay rights. Meanwhile, pro-death penalty, pro-choice George Pataki is free to receive communion across the Hudson.

12. And don't forget
The Pope was against the attack of Iraq. Any Catholic who is in favor of Bush's war should also be denied communion.

for a challenge to the Church's 401c3 status.

10. Seems like there should be.
I am tired of religious groups having tax free status when they are involved in partisan matters. My donations to political groups are not tax deductible but if I give to some fanatical church on the other side it is tax deductible. Hardly seems right.

11. I wish!
But that would create a horrendous backlash, given the current climate.

Some other major scandal has to break before they can be challenged. Sadly, molesting children was not enough.

They need to be discovered having meetings, money changing hands, etc., with repukes or repuke henchmen. While I believe them capable of it, I don't think anything will happen.

15. For Christ's sake, this is just bullshit.
It's so hard to be a Christian these days when the Catholics, Protestents and the PNACs get all jiggy with it and totally corrupt the original intent.

"God" said what to "who?"

16. I'm Catholic, and I think this is a load of....
bullshit. I've always differentiated my political views(I'm pro-choice) on a subject from my personal views(I personally don't like it). I don't believe that government's role is to advocate how people should live their lives, and I especially don't think the Catholic church should be using government as an instrument to force its views on anyone.

Shame on my church for this one.

that is between him and his church. It is absolutely none of my business, and it is nobody else's business.
