21. Rumsfeld and Myers did apologize
in their opening statements. They were well-written statements, delivered with conviction. (pun intended)

Unfortunately, their apologies came under duress. They were "asked" to apologize.

Under those circumstances, it don't mean shit.

Of course you're not.

According to this logic, we don't have to apologize for anything, unless someone has first apologized for a previous transgression against us that has absolutely nothing to do with why we should be apologizing now.

Well, then! I'm not apologizing for anything, at all, ever, until someone apologizes for putting that nasty scrape into the back of my car while it was parked in Madison last year.

Get more and more soldiers killed in Iraq. Don't think that the Iraqis aren't listening to this foolishness knowing full well what happened in Fallujah and the collective punishment the US meted out for the four "contractor" murders. I think what Lieberman said will cause great angst among the people in Iraq and across the Middle East and could very well cause a backlash.

Yes, no one apologized for 9/11 because that atrocity wasn't committed by a nation or state. It was committed by a loosely gathered group of worldwide terrorists who were hell bent on accomplishing their mission. They accomplished their mission, so why should they apologize?

Now, if the US Military's stated *goal* was to torture Iraqi civilians, then we wouldn't have anything to apologize for either. But - according to Rumsfeld - that wasn't our stated goal in Iraq...though Rummy just stated correctly that bush made the determination that the Geneva Conventions don't apply to members of al Queda.

Imagine if Joe had said something like this: "no one apologized for 9/11, and we shouldn't lose any sleep waiting for an apology. No one expects terrorists to apologize for their horrible acts. But we're supposed to be better than that. We're supposed to set the example. In this case, we KNOW for a fact that the people who committed these tortures in Iraq were US servicemen and women, and in a democracy, we hold such people accountable. And that accountability goes all the way up the ladder. We don't prosecute only those on the lowest rung of the ladder, we hold accountable the entire ladder. You, Sec Rumsfeld, the president and, in fact, this Congress, are responsible to the American people first, and the world second. So, what say you, sir?"

It's Judaism has nothing to do with Lieberman personally, it's Lieberman's constant catering to the Republicans and Bushco. He claims he wants Democrats and Republicans to work together side by side. It's a bit like a mouse wanting to befriend the cat that is about ready to eat him.

61. And you expected...?
he said no one apologized for the 3000 killed on 9-11

C'mon. You know where Lieberman is. No one should be surprised that he still thinks the "war on terror" should be the focus of life.

I am amazed at how often it happens that when the U.S. makes a mess of things the so-called leaders of the country search and dig to find some other country that's doing worse... sort of as some way to make the U.S. look a little better. That's so childish!

I didn't realize he had this sort of point of view back when he was running for Vice-President, but thank heavens that he didn't wind up in that job, and thank heavens that he's not running for President right now. Yes, I'm sorry that Gore isn't in the White House right now, but I'm really glad that Lieberman isn't Vice-President. I guess life is strange that way?

62. So we're the same as terrorists?
Lieberman thinks that we don't have to behave any different from terrorists?

And how can he still be helping to link 9-11 and Iraq?

I SO agree with you about that "human embarrassment" to our Party.

64. Good point.
He's equating a small group of terrorists, with every single American.

Those terrorists didn't apologize, so why should we?

Beautiful, Joe. Beautiful.

67. I have stuck my neck out
in the past to defend Lieberman in the face of what I felt were vicious attacks.
However, his statement today was beyond the pale!
If there is a primary challenge to him I will support his challenger.
Enough, already!

78. He was right
Well, glad to know there are so many articulate, substantive folks on this website (F--- Y-- Lieberman). I'm sure the middle third of the electorate that will decide the next election will here statements like that one and all be "won over."

Seriously, I thought Lieberman was right. The Islamic leadership in this country never really went far enough in condemning the terrorist acts of 9/11. They were much more concerned with reminding us that 9/11 wasn't indicative of Muslims and to not violate their rights. What they should have done was show how much they care about their country, so much for "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."

Moreover, a lot of people are STILL waiting for those on the fringe to show at least as much outrage over Madrid, 9/11, or another bus bombing in Israel as they do about what a handful of American soldiers did that, at worst, could have been called "mental torture."

Can anybody actually name one idea that came from the "left," regardless of whether you even agree with it or not, to counter-terrorism? They became very good at telling us what they DIDN'T think should be done. They are going to blow the next election because they just don't get it. "Middle" America isn't interested in congressional hearings about who knew what prior to 9/11. What they are waiting for is... what precisely are your ideas now?

Bob Vaught

83. Welcome Robert.
You will not be here long I am afraid.

And for the record, our ideas revolve around the idea that we need to focus on the lack of security at home rather than the lack of democracy abroad. Simply put, we are for what the President is for - security - without unnecessary warfare or nation-building (the latter he once also opposed, by the way). That the current administration has done little to improve our infrastructure and terror-fighting capabilities on the homefront while pouring billions of dollars into a war effort that clearly is not working is testament to their ineptitude.

Further, this website did express outrage for the bombings in Madrid, but unlike those on the right, we felt the Spanish made the right decision to disassociate themselves with the United States for their own safety. And if you believe we did not show outrage over 9/11, you clearly have been misinformed by the right.

What happened in Iraq was not mental torture, it was physical and mental torture. One cannot force another to mentally remove their clothes and pose in sexual positions, nor can anyone mentally put another human in a dog chain, nor can anyone mentally place another in a hood and tie electric wires to him or her. You are equivocating because you know that in a single instance, the United States lost justification for the war.

9/11 was not indicative of Muslims. It was indicative of terrorists. Timothy McVeigh was a terrorist. The Klu Klux Klansmen are terrorists. The Army of God soldiers are terrorists. Terrorism is not an exclusively Muslim practice. And for the record, Muslim leaders did condemn the terrorists. But I suppose that doesn't fit into your black and white worldview.

This is a site for Democrats and liberals. We are not trying to persuade the "middle third of the electorate." That is the candidates job. You are clearly not in that "middle third" because you are regurgitating talking points that are without merit and overly simplistic. You know who you are voting for and you have just come here to instigate.

Fare well. You clearly lack the capacity to read the rules before you sign on to web forums. Please go to freerepublic.com if you want to bask in the glory that is conservative memes.

86. my proposal
from the very beginning was to SERIOUSLY re-think the way the U.S. conducts it's foriegn policy...If we hadn't been screwing around with legit governments in other countries for DECADES, then just maybe the blowback wouldn't have been so harsh...I say, pull out of iraq, afghanistan, cut off the aid to turkey and israel, and guard our borders like the dickens (i.e., if someone has a shady or extremist past, don't give them a free-reign visa to roam around the u.s., student or not..)

Finally, the next time 4 airliners go missing, TRY to actually make a phone call or alert somebody that might do something, instead of sitting on our hands until it's all over. (i'm being sarcastic. I'm a lihop-er)

90. Only four years to go until he must stand for reelection
No Democrats challenged him in 2000.

He then went on to defeat his Republican opponent by a roughly 2-1 margin.

88. Could Ralph Nader win Lieberman's seat?
He probably wouldnt try, but if he could it would be a massive message to the democratic party. Certainly much more dramatic than simply splitting the liberal vote in presidential elections, and then after the dem party does start to shift left trying to split the vote again.

He would become so much more important and further his causes so much more by getting into the senate or the house than these silly runs for president.

91. Im not positive, but it doesnt surprise me.
Some reasons that occur to me:

-He doesnt actually want to be in office. He just wants the publicity of elections. Once in office he'd become a politician and he could no longer say he was an outsider.

-He would just split the votes with a dem anywhere he ran. Running for president and not getting it when no one expects you to get it doesnt hurt him much. If he actually made a serious run for office and failed it would make him look bad, and the vote splitting issue would be a big problem, because i doubt the democrats would ever endorse him, or that he would accept that.
