NC is only competitive if, say, Edwards is on the ticket? Maybe I'm wrong.

Presidential Ad Campaign May Find Way To N.C.

Kerry Campaign Inquires About TV Advertising Rates For May, June

POSTED: 6:21 pm EDT May 6, 2004
UPDATED: 6:54 pm EDT May 6, 2004

RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina is rarely a swing state in presidential politics. Not since Jimmy Carter won North Carolina in 1976 has the state voted Democrat for president. Now, the John Kerry campaign is showing signs it may invest resources to reverse the trend.

John Kerry's TV ads are now running on local stations in 19 so-called battleground states like Florida, Ohio, and Wisconsin, but not in North Carolina. In fact, Democratic presidential nominees have not even contested North Carolina on televison since Bill Clinton bought ad time in 1992.

The Kerry campaign has inquired about, but not committed to, TV advertising rates for May and June in North Carolina and four other southern states -- Virgina, Tennessee, Georgia and Kentucky.

"John Kerry has what it takes right here to be president of the United States," said former presidential candidate John Edwards in March 2004.

:7. Glad you brought it to GD.

Three reasons:

- Edwards seriously being considered for Veep

- *'s vulnerablity on economy and IW. Make no mistake. Military families are not happy. NC is in play in a way it hasn't been since about 1976.

- Cynical view says Kerry is only bluffing about ad time, just to make * spend resources here.

36. Bush Ads in NC
Bush ads are running in Cumberland County which where Ft Bragg is located. It would seem that Bush is not real sure of his military support. In 2000 there were maybe a couple of ads tossed out as a sop so Republicans wouldn't feel badly.

The ads in Cumberland County started as the nice ones talking about what a good guy Bush was then quickly went to attacks on Kerry. There not only have been massive job losses in NC, but military families are unhappy with policies. In addition, retirees are getting hit with concurrent reciept issues, the only federal employees to face such penalties.

Soldiers don't have to vote for Kerry. All they have to do is not vote for Bush to make a difference in what happens in NC.

59. Ads are running in Arkansas.
And in the last poll I saw, Bush and Kerry were in a dead heat 47-45 in Bush's favor.

I had resigned myself to the likelihood that AR would go Republican this year. Now, I still think it's likely, but it's not nearly as likely.

11. NC Job losses
Our Gov., Mike Easley has not helped the situation. Either as AG or Gov. Continual and record tax hikes. Increasing regulation and red tape. And billions in lost dollars in lawsuits as AG that everyone told him he would lose and to settle (in one case for $0). He refused and it cost the state big time.

He also took hundreds of millions of sales tax dollars from towns and counties all over the state, putting tremendous financial hardship on those communities.

I wish another dem would step forward and challenge him but it isn't going to happen.

Also, our former Sec. of Agriculture is in federal prison for a whole host of campaign violations and misuse of tax payer money. And Rep. Frank Ballance is likely facing an indictment on misuse of tax dollars (he is not seeking reelection, though he filed this week and then dropped out).

There is some serious problems with the government here in NC from the top down.

While it would be better to be able to blame the economic problems in our state on Bush, most of our problems are self inflicted.

may be a "repug" city as you call it because our mayor is a republican (his wife is a dem). But Apex is a great place to live. And though he is a republican, Keith Weatherly has done an outstanding job as mayor. He was unopposed in the last election.

I honestly can not think of anything in this town that is "wrong" or needs "fixing". Its a wonderful town, and as our slogan says "The Peak of Good Living."

I've worked for 10 years in downtown Durham and have walked to my car thousands of times without a problem, at night.

But if seeing a black person walking downtown on the sidewalk at night makes you automatically feel unsafe walking to your car, I guess I can see your point.

Me? I don't feel that way.

I forgot the VP question.

I was kind of flabbergasted, you being a resident of NC, would think the Scotts were republicans. Put me at a loss.

Personally, I currently have no preference for VP. I honestly do not think it really matters. I think the VP selection (for any candidate) poses more of an ability to hurt the candidate than help him.

No one votes for the VP. Hell, the first Bush won with Quayle!

In fact, here is a little test for you to try. It will show the importance of a VP selection.

Get all the losing and winning candidates from the past 50 years and ask people you know to name their running mate from each campaign (as some ran more than once with different VPs).

The number of people who will be able to name all of them will be zero. Those that can name one of two will be very very small. And those that can name several will be even smaller.

But if forced to pick someone, and throwing in a longshot option, I would go with Max Cleland. Democrats are wild about him, and they are very upset with his treatment in 2002. Would wildly energize the base and bring in at least one southern state or two. Two southern states for Kerry would instantly spell Bushs defeat.

On Edit: On edit, I think you should do some editing and add an edit saying you were wrong about Gov. Scott. Lets try to uphold honesty here.

7. As a resident of NC
I honestly think he would be more competitive in NC without Edwards on the ticket. While Edwards is loved by the democratic base, he will not pick up a single GOP voter, and the person with only a passing interest in the election is not a fan of Edwards. It is a common believe that Edwards abandoned NC for the national spotlight the day after he was elected. And to be honest, as a resident of NC first and a democrat 2nd, the impression is not undeserved.

I don't know what kind of drugs your on, but I sure don't want any.

And it is a common held belief that Edwards didn't re-up for the Senate because 1) He was hoping to be VP, and 2) He would lose.

He is a wildly popular senator with the media, but back here in NC, on the ground, he is not as popular as his image would lead people to believe.

22. Edwards' N.C. support up

January 10, 2004   Democrats in North Carolina are far more accepting of Sen. John Edwards' presidential bid, but he has made no progress convincing home-state Republicans that he should replace President Bush, according to a new poll commissioned by The News & Observer. The poll, taken less than two weeks before Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucus, found that a majority of North Carolinians -- 55 percent -- approve of Edwards' White House bid, compared with 39 percent when he launched his candidacy a year ago.

There's no reason to believe the 50% vote he got wasn't representative of what he would have gotten had there been a contested primary (except that you might argue that it was low, since he'd already withdrawn).

35. Here is the latest POLLING done in NC
NC is NOT going to be an automatic "gimme" for Bush*.

Here is what the latest polling shows in NC:

" Poll Results: April 26-29, 2004

* Bush’s overall approval rating drops 5.6 percent
* Jobs are top issue in U.S. Senate race

President Bush’s overall job approval rating in North Carolina has dropped 5.6 percentage points since February, and a larger percentage of North Carolinians are expressing unease about the war in Iraq, according to the latest Elon University Poll.

The statewide poll of 543 adults, conducted April 26-29, has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.21 percentage points.

The survey found that 49.6 percent strongly approved or approved of the job the president is doing. That figure is down from 55.2 percent in February. "

Also in the race for Senate:

"Eighty-two percent of adults, and 87 percent of registered voters, recognized Erskine Bowles’ name, an increase of about five points since September. Forty-three percent of adults, and 46 percent of registered voters, recognized Burr’s name, which represented a jump of nearly nine points since September.

Bowles, an investment banker from Charlotte, previously ran for the Senate and lost to Republican Elizabeth Dole in 2002. Burr, who is from Winston-Salem, represents the Fifth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Bowles’ sizeable advantage in name recognition is probably due in large part to his having run statewide in 2002,” Vercellotti said."

is a despicable sack of shit. Bowles should be able to beat him hands down if he has a spine.

A cursory glance of campaign contributions to Burr shows that he has numerous and repeated over-the-limit campaign contributions. And he's a fucking liar. Most recently I heard him on a local radio call-in show where a caller asked him where he stood on changing the overtime rules. Despite having voted to change the rules less than a month prior, he actually told the caller he wasn't sure what he was talking about. The caller bought it and the host let it go despite it being yet another example of the cancerous contempt for the truth that is devouring the republican party.

Lying, sack of shit. This pig should be easier to beat than an egg.

46. Bingo!
Its the JOBS, stupid!

Maybe the Kerry Campaign's internal polls are showing weakness in Bush's support in NC. Maybe they think they can be competitive there, or at least force Bush to spend some time campaigning there to shore up his base there (and therefore less time in the battle ground states)

50. If that's true, we could probably start a list...
...of reasons people said Edwards wouldn't be a good nominee that later proved false:

1) The Democrats aren't going to win NC anyway.

2) Jobs won't be on people's minds, just war and terror.

56. 3) Edwards doesn't have enough experience
Like experience really matters to the general public. Sure, it matters to us, but we're political geeks, not the average voter.

* was a one term Governor of a weak-gov state. Qualye had only been in the house for what... two terms?
