Rumsfeld will meet with Bush tonight to discuss stepping down....
for the benefit of the military and the nation. Bush will reluctantly accept his decision. Because, he cannot withstand the scrutiny when the other photos and video are made public. And Bush will thank him for his service...

1. That's a slim chance
Rumsfeld is part of the neo-con network that was needed to make the Iraq occupation a reality. I think Bush will hang onto him for dear life.

7. It will be out of necessity...
And it has now become a necessity because more bad news is yet to come and might point toward Bush himself if he cannot get someone of Rumsfeld's stature to step down. He's gone.

11. Even if he resigns,
I doubt he'll be too far out of the neocon loop. In some ways, that thought is scarier than keeping him on...Think about roaches in the kitchen when the lights are off.

15. rummy's stepping down suits the neocon plan
you see, he's a scapegoat now, any photos, videos, stories, and victims of abuse and war crimes can now be rested squarely on rummy's shoulders, leaving the vhimp and the walking heart attack unscathed

2. I hope you're right, but I doubt it.
These arrogant bastards are true believers. They believe that they are absolutely right and that everyone who opposes them or their policies is the enemy. They won't step down, they will have to be tossed out on their asses

4. I don't think so myself.
The Senate Hearings to confirm a new SoD would hurt the BFEE more than keeping Rumsfeld on.

22. Agree - Josh Marshall posted about this yesterday...
No way would the R's want a confirmation hearing for a new SecDef, during wartime, this close to the election. His point was that the hearing would become an inquiry into everything that has gone wrong in Iraq and Afghanistan - and that would be much more problematic for Bush than living with Rummy.

However, If Bush wins in Nov, I'd expect Rummy gone before the first of December.

27. I agree XNASA
The *ies will have to appoint a new Sec'y of Defense and the confirmation hearings would uncover too many secrets. I think they will try to keep Rummie on. I think they will try to wait out the scandal.

Someone harmless, with nothing in the record for the Senate to grab hold of. Maybe a Democrat. Think William Cohen in reverse.

5. Is there a source for this? Or are you speculating?
Just wondering. My guess is that if he's going down, it'll either be within the next 48 hours in an effort to stop the bleeding ASAP or several weeks from now when B*sh has demonstrable proof that Rummy is dragging his election odds down.

I would actually prefer the latter.

6. FOX just reported 70% of Americans believe he should stay
The spin has already begun with the dis-information poles.

We need to get the word out Rummy must go.....All the Dem leaders are behind Rummy being forced out. It would severely weaken the Bush re-election effort

14. If Rummy does, it would take an enormous amount of heat away from Bush.
Bush could blame the whole Iraq mess and the fighting and soldiers deaths on Rummy, and many people to go will along with Bush, that there will be "immediate changes" and it was Rummy's fault not Bush's.

These fucks (Rove) eat their own!

23. I don't see that
I believe it would damage the Bushco re-election attempts irrevocably. they would be thrown into a state of disarray as they scramble to replace him. Other members of his administration would definitely sit up and take notice too

"Rove is the lightning Rod that directs heat away from Bush."
That's true...

However, with a "new" Sec. of Defense...they can then point the finger at Rumsfeld and his lies, distortions and fuck ups (the same ineviable problems will occur in the future, of course).

Not unlike "It's Clinton's fault" that so many millions buy and still give the benefit of the doubt to Bush on. (Not around DU, of course)...

In so much as with a new Sec. Defense, (which would take about all of ten seconds to nominate someone else for the position). It then would become...

"It's not 'Fred's' or Bush's fault...This fuck up goes back to Rummy and we can direct isolate these problems to Rummy's tenure...And we making great strides, doing our best to fix the problems and change direction, but these changes take time." And all the media hobos will nod their heads and say "yep, they do, un huh, yep, hic hic"!

As I stated above, it will indeed help Bush.

I was originally replying and agreeing with your thread message, I posted, if Rummy steps down if will take some big heat off of Bush.

On the other hand, Rummy stepping down, would insinuate that the invasion and war was/is a big fuck up, for Bush as well

For strictly partisan purposes, it would be in the Democrats interest to have that lead weight around the neck of the Bush administration. And the policy won't change..and we could get Wolfowitz.
