It would be bad for the Democrats for Rummy to resign.
This story will have real legs if he sticks around and keeps blaming the problem on the leak of the photographs. The public is going to get a look at the real Rummy if he sticks around, if he resigns it will look like he fell on his sword for the Chimp.

6. Yes, true. In that respect, he fits in well with the other Bushistas.
The only question is what would most hurt the Bushistas, make it most likely that they will be dumped.

2. Call me ridiculously optimistic, but right now it seems like a win-win
If he leaves, it looks bad for the Bushies, and he's an important voice for them.

If he stays, it'll just get hotter.

unless, of course, they find something else to distract us with quickly...(gee, what are the odds)

4. A distraction
maybe the price of gas will drop back below $2.00 a gallon or photos of georgie having sex with a goat will appear. Neither is likely to happen any time soon, but it's worth looking forward to.

3. If he does resign, we can hope for the
"Dominoe theory" (those of us from the Vietnam era are familiar with that one)

Remember Watergate. one by one the dominoes fell.

5. I disagree.
First of all, it is bad for America if he stays. This fact has little or nothing to do with politics.

As far as the political-and-election-related ramifications, if Rumsfeld was fired (as if) or resigned, he must be replaced, and quicky, very, very quickly. You can't replace the Secretary of Defense without nominating his replacement, which brings up a whole new slew of Senate Confirmation Hearings that will likely, in a heated election season, deteriorate into an embarrassing attack on the Pentagon.

It's the last thing Bush needs right now. He'd much rather take his chances with Rumsfeld's unpopularity and leave him in there than open up a new can-o-worms by attempting to replace him.

It's a lose-lose situation for the President, the way I see it. I'm sure Rove has invested in a truckload of heavy-duty Tums.

7. I disagree also
Confirmation hearings for a new Sec Defense would allow Democrats to hammer the administration in public view, repeatedly. It would keep the news focused on the failures.

If Rumsfeld stays, he's going to be allowed a period of redemption, after they whip him a bit.

Fire him.

I don't think he should resign or be fired. Let him stay on to keep the stink up in that corrupt administration.
