tearing down the prison would just be another propaganda photo-op
Edited on Fri May-07-04 03:40 PM by mopaul
several jerks have suggested that this act of tearing down abu ghoul prison would somehow ease the hatred and unrest caused by the u.s. crimes there.

all they can think about is IMAGES. caskets. dead babies. photos of torture. landing on a battleship. kissing babies. falling statues

tearing down the infamous prison would be as useful as masturbating in public

3. Chambliss said it
During the hearing.

But I think it is a good idea and we never should have used the thing in the first place. I remember thinking it was stupid at the time, use the torture prison to imprison more Iraqis and expect them to think things would be different. Stupid. And now things aren't any different. Horrific.

2. The building's not important...
... what's important is what happens in the buildings!

Add another billion or two to the cost of the "liberation," so we can at least humiliate prisoners in a comfortable, air-conditioned environment?

Why does that need to be explained?!?

:bounce:

4. Iraqis and Arabs would see it for what it was
Edited on Fri May-07-04 03:45 PM by Tempest
A ploy and propaganda.

The Iraqis and Arabs would see it as the U.S. trying to cover up its crimes against humanity.

6. Symbols are important
While I agree the actions in the prisons are far more important, symbols matter a great deal. The fall of the Berlin Wall gave a concrete image to associate with the collapse of the Soviet Union.

We never should have been using that prison to begin with. We shouldn't be in Iraq, for that matter.

7. It would be another fucking Saddam statue coming down
with aid of a US tank.

For God's sakes, for once, leave it to the Iraqis to decide!

8. It should be made a war crime memorial
By the time all the horror comes out of this administration, it appears the things we now know will pale in comparison.

9. But masturbating, whether in public or not, does make some feel better
Unfortunately they don't realize it's a placebo. If the outcry makes any difference at all, perhaps the tearing down can be symbolic for Murikans of our determination to begin to take the high road.

But I agree, it will change nothing in Iraq.

12. "Photo Op" | I was going to post on exactly this!!

what utter stupidity! a 'feel good' photo op will be just the thing. ship in the insipid chimp to kiss iraqi babies (pre-screen and given cavity searches in advance, duh!)

at least one of the military guys had the common sense to say: well, it would take 2-3 years to replace the facility and they NEED it.

i HATE these IDIOTS!

13. Germany concentration camps never torn down...
That's a building of history. It should not be demolished to cover upAmerican's ass.

14. Many were torn down
Some by the Nazis to hide their tracks, some after the war. I visited Dachau in 1980. Only one original building remained out of dozens.

If it comes down, I think it should be the Iraqi people who do it. It may be as emotive a structure for the Iraqis as the consentration camps were for Jews. Our tearing it down for political reasons taints any emotional benefit from seeing it demolished.

15. I disagree, but they should have done it immediately
When they "won" the war they should have torn down every single one of Saddam's palaces, and the jail.

But they didn't. They moved into them instead.

Big mistake. Too late now!

16. Photo-ops are what they do best
I think it should come down, as a symbol -- and symbols have to stand for something. They are not the end in themselves. *After* Rummy, Wolfy, and others are out of their jobs, *after* direct apologies from Chimpy, *after* thorough investigation into how badly they botched this invasion from start to finish, *after* Congress issues censures, *after* we have a true exit strategy in place and we're on the way out, THEN tearing down that prison will be a symbol of our responsibility for what we've done.
