I can't help but think that all the hue and cry about wanting Rummy to resign is EXACTLY what the Bushistas want.

The policy of not following the Geneva Convention came from the TOP - President Cheney, Emptysuit Bush on down. Joining in the call for Rummy's resignation only deflects the fire away from where it should be - the stooge posing as president and his inner circle.

I'm utterly befuddled at the sheeplike behavior I'm seeing today.

Rummy was doing things EXACTLY as Unka Dick and Bush wanted!

The only possible upside I can think of from a Rummy resignation is that in anger he would hit the talk circuit and badmouth the administration big-time. But that's highly unlikely. I'm sure his cozy Carlyle position is already all lined up.

1. i get that impression as well
but we all know how Rummy's felt about the Geneva conventions, so he does have his share in the responsibility.

I'm also seeing this thru the prism of Rumsfeld's "nobody asked me to go to war with Iraq" to statement to Tweety. Maybe that was the beginning of the end for him in the Admin.

Also, where the fuck is Ashcroft?

Rumsfeld is arguably the most powerful person in the regime. There is some question of who is bossing who. He has gotten his way on every thing he has promoted.

Nobody has stood up to him yet. Perhaps Rumsfeld and Cheney together that are so powerful the legislature has been putty in their hands. Taking them down one at a time is the right course. Rumsfeld is the more skilled, able and powerful politician. He is the keystone. (Half a loaf is better than none?). Compared to these two the rest of the executive is largely ineffectual. We are not talking about a democracy or constitutional government here. This is a government of arbitrary and dictatorial individuals.

Rumsfeld represents the defense contracting industy and the air force. A potent fascist combination. Cheney the energy industry. It is a powerful alliance. The defense industry has the greater power having executed MIHOP and gotten away with it. Also, it my belief that defense was behind anthrax and 2002 election irregularities. No doubt Cheney backed it, but it couldn't have been done without defense. Defense needs to be decapitated. Removal of Rumsfeld will restore some power to the legislature and the traditional leadership in the other Armed Forces, regardless of what happens during the election. Myer and undersecretaries need to go with him.

4. Cheney is the lead architect and strongest voice....
He's going to get away

How can Cheney and Rumsfeld be equals when they signed the letter asking Clinton to invade Iraq in 1998 and now Rumsfeld falls. C'mon!

5. please read excerpt below
The signal for an attack on Rumsfeld was given by Bush himself, in a rebuke to the Pentagon boss delivered at a closed-door meeting Wednesday in the White House, then promptly leaked to the press to provide fodder for the evening television news and front-page reports in the major daily newspapers Thursday.

It's my own thread, but I really think that people should at least think about this. Whenever I see DU falling in to lockstep about anything other than the need to get the GOP scum out of office, I start to worry. We are a diverse group and should have a diverse array of thought on this.
