here already? Let us do something good for the Iraqi people for a change

and adopt one here? doesn't make sense. You don't seem to understand the bond one develops with dogs and cats. I remember the shameful treatment of GI dogs sent to VN compared to the way they were treated in previous wars.

5. If we would treat each other at least half as well as we treat
our pets those soldiers would not be there in the first place. There would be no war.

24. Obviously, you haven't seen rampant animal abuse.
Do you know it's an indicator of violence toward people? People don't always treat their pets well. My father, brother and their friends were incredibly abusive to animals and got away with it their whole lives.

4. Why don't you look at the website before criticizing?
Especially the "Soldiers' Corner"

(Annoys the hell outta me when people do that -- don't bother to read an article or peruse a website before spouting off as if they actually know something about it.)

27. You bet, especially for the supposed or actual TORTURE VICTIMS like
joining or renewing our memberships with Amnesty International or something. I should talk for I still hadn't yet renewed my membership with the local Amnesty group.

8. BRAVO!!
Good! I have bookmarked the page and will donate when I can.

We have budgeted around $100/month to go to charities. I think this months, or next's will be AdoptPaws.

Folks, we spent all yesterday and today gasping at those horrible photos. If that is all we see, it is easy to imagine that that is all the American Soldier is about. It isn't. There are charities out there to ameliorate the condtion of Iraqi children, women and men, they have arganizations there now and those which are showing concern for the Iraqis, Afghans, etc... and now for the animals as well.
THIS is a GOOD thing! Let's stop cursing the darkness and light a few candles, eh?

They will be getting $100.00 from me soon and probably again when the budget allows it. I have given time and effort and money to Habitat for Humanity, to my church, to several other charities. I'm not rich, but I am blessed and so are you.

Anyone want to match me? :)

9. Good for you -- and thanks
I'm glad SOMEONE here "got it."

I can't quite match you, but I'm sure every little bit helps. And I know there are so many places where we need to put our resources, but I thought this was a very sweet and deserving one. I also know there are other animal lovers out there besides me.

Oh, welcome to DU!

Hi, Slink. :hi:

11. Done
Thanks for the heads up Eloriel.

What these personnel come home to is sketchy at best. This appointed admin uses the military, does not respect them, they hate vets. My Dad spoke many times after his return from Vietnam of the incredible service war dogs left behind. Looking here to foster any pets we can.

13. Ready, willing, and able to foster
in a heartbeat. I will stay on top of this.

The pups are great. Will help me remember all the lessons I learned as an Air Force brat who's Dad served extended tours. Animals wherever he was were a big part of his survival. I will help, no doubt.

I will link this in all of my personal and business e-mails.

Thank you Eloriel, you give much.

17. Great idea to put it in our emails. Thanks!
Survival, yeah. The "Soldiers' Corner" page at the site is pretty moving. These dogs (and a few cats) are providing a LOT of aid and comfort to the troops who adopt them while over there. Personally, I just can't imagine being forced due to circumstances to leave one behind, which is exactly why this grassroots effort is so terrific, IMO.

Thank you for those links; I'm perusing them now.

I am nothing if not a lover of animals, and I would love to give these pets a happy home, if only temporary. :D

Thank you so much!

ON EDIT: You know, I really, really needed that. A good story out of this horrific war. I went ahead and made a donation, but I have to tell you, if there's a spare pup on one of those airlifts, or one whose daddy or mommy is still in Iraq, I want one!!!

I couldn't help but think too bad the pets of expatriate evacuees from the Iranian "Islamic Revolution" didn't have the same help, but I did remember reading in a book called "Mission To Iran" by Ambassador William Healy " Tell Brezinski to get stuffed" Sullivan, that he did arrange an animal airlift for them if they happened to "own" any American expatriates.

On edit I couldn't help but get the impression that even Amb. Sullivan had more "cajones" than "President" Bush since he did calmly "face down" Iranian revolutionary "terrorists."

On double edit I also wished Ambassador Taylor would have written a similar sort of book since I wondered what he did about matters such as expatriates' pets, not to mention any Canadians or Johnny or Janie Canucks who were ILLEGALLY DETAINED either under the regime of the SHAH or of the AYATOLLAH and I wonder if he snuck those Americans out of Iran at the time since "Ayatollah Assahola" was his sentiments exactly but he was too much of a diplomat to do anything about it until late 1979 - early 1980.

28. I can't foster a pet,
I tried and my partner almost killed me (already have a pug and four cats in a two bedroom house). However, I will pass this on to everyone I know (especially the few chimplickers I know, maybe they can finally make themselves useful). I wish I could do more, its another good cause (there are so many it can be overwhelming at times). There is SO much suffering going on due to our cabal's evil agenda, damn them to the exact same hell they smugly think (wrongly) the rest of us are going to.

29. Nevermind, I had this
confused with a group I'd heard about which provides temporary homes to soldiers deployed oversea which would otherwise go to a shelter. I tried to foster one over the objections of my partner. I will donate as soon as I get paid. I don't take back the damning however, I hate our regime more and more everyday for the hurt they have caused at home and abroad to so many two and four legged creatures. :grr:

30. "Tanks" for the lift. I really needed it.
The pics with these wonderful soldiers and their pets really made me thankful for these many good soldiers and helped restore my faith in them after all this crap about abuse came out.

I would love to foster them all, but unfortunately (or fortunately) I'm already knee-deep in fostering - have been for over the past 6 years or so.

I wish I could keep evey single one - it's so hard to let them go - but to see them and their new human friends happy in their new home makes it all worth while. If I did what my heart truly wanted, I'd have a house with over a couple hundred dogs and cats now.

We are currently fostering a very pretty sweet golden retriever girl right now - it will be hard to let her go - we are in no hurry to find her a new home - but there are a couple families already interested.

I wish the organization lots of success, even tho I can't help with that particular organization now due to my current points of concentration locally.

One who has never known the love of a pet and the heartbreak of loss or separation, just does not understand.

I pray many words of thanks to all of you who will/do/have reached out for this particular cause.

31. Remember, they need donations too, not just fostering
And I so agree re the love of a pet/heartbreak of loss or separation. I've adopted and/or re-homed 18 dogs and cats in the 5 years we've lived out in the country (where people dump their dogs indiscriminately, apparently), and each and every one of those re-homed has a special place in my heart and probably always will.

Pets are really good for one's mental health, and I know that these dogs and cats will help them when they get home as well as while they're there.
