The Arrogance of Republicans Has Dishonored America
Edited on Sat May-08-04 08:07 AM by kentuck
There was an arrogance that preceded George W Bush's controversial selection to the White House. A group of arrogant individuals thought they had the solution to resolving the problem in the Middle East. They thought they could create a democracy in the area and stabilize our oil supplies and make the area safer for our allies, mainly Israel. Unfortunately, their plan required violence - war - to actually come to fruition. Iraq was their primary target.

Saddam had been a nemesis of the US and more specifically, the Bush family, since before the first Gulf War. The new Resident in the White House was arrogant, if nothing else. It was not difficult for the PNAC group to persuade him of the righteousness of their cause. When 9/11 happened, the door was open to put their plan into effect.

The arrogance of Republicans has been growing dangerously for a couple of decades. The icons of talk radio assisted a great deal in the process. They convinced their followers within the Republican Party that America did not need the United Nations. America did not need to adhere to treaties with other nations. Our military would simply go in and take care of any problems that might arise. The attitudes within the Republican Party became contagious, almost to cult-like status symbols.

George W Bush was the empty vessel in which they poured all their ill-advised and dangerous ideas. He told the world, "bring it on". He strutted across the world stage like another Mussolini, as his new followers worshipped and excused his awkward and sometimes, less than intelligent remarks. He was their man to pull the trigger. He was arrogant and he would do what the "new" Republicans wanted him to do. He was on a mission from God. He could not do wrong.

Now, that arrogance has discredited America around the world. They find themselves in a quagmire in the Middle East. They have created an international war on terrorism from a small bunch of regional outlaws and terrorists. Our own country is divided moreso than anytime since at least, Vietnam. Many of our longtime allies have deserted our cause. We are paying the price for Republican arrogance.

(edited to add "the Bush family")

5. The truth shall set us free.
But the bonds on the Republicans are heavy and tight.

2. Kentuck, yes we are on the same wavelength this morning
I guess many of us are feeling similarly this morning. The prison abuse has turned the light on this evil mess, like turning the light on in the kitchen in the middle of the night to find a hoard cockroaches covering the place. We are waking up and we are shocked by what we see.

8. Republican backers
Too bad the people that back this administration are just as arrogant as he is. It really is disgusting reading some of them post on message boards. I wonder if they would be so arrogant if it were their children or families being tortured or abused. It's so very sad to see americans defending this kind of abuse.

3. Your words will be in little children's textbooks 20 years from now...
You've pretty much summed it up.

I saw a clip of Mussolini on the History channel last night, and was completely reminded of Bush.

4. Great post Kentuck, Democratic acquiescence is also to blame,
our craven leaders ceded their sworn obligation to lead, to Republican fanatics, and now we are international pariahs, it will take decades to cure this Republican plague.
Keep up the good work

6. Mussolini: I thought of that when he was strutting on the aircraft
carrier!!"He swaggers like Mussolini," I thought.

Your point is well-taken. Arrogance, hubris, always knowing you are "right" and "righteous," has taken our country down the path of destruction. We are destined to be another banana republic.

I forsee decades of work for us to even come up to acceptable international standards. And our "way of life," or profligacy in using the world's resources will come back to haunt us, as we and the other industrialized nations bite the bullet.PNAC had noble goals in spreading democracy, but it can't be accomplished at the point of a gun while stealing nations' resources and privatizing everything.

9. Kudos Kentuck!
Will also posted a great piece explaining the absolute failure this regime has brought upon this country.

The good thing about ignorant and arrogant assholes...they always over-reach and are too into themselves to see the forrest through the trees. There's a growing tide of unhappy people in this country that are about to speak in a very loud voice.

These goons forget that majority of us didn't vote for their manchild in 2000 and are chomping for another shot at this bastard. We'll be there on election day in record numbers, and thanks to folks like Bev Harris, in most states, our votes WILL count.

My wish is to focus on working on the local and congressional races...the infrastructure these assholes used to leverage themselves into power...and blow 'em out. A Democratic House is more needed than ever if we're going to start on the road back to sanity.

Cheers!

10. The constituency of the Republican party may be changing soon
Jeff Sessions, John Cornyn, Liz Dole, Bill Frist, Wayne Allard and most of all my hated right winger is your Senator from Kentucky, Kentuck.

Of course I'm bias!

11. I'm Watching The "Old Guard"...
John Warner is an interesting study right now. He's caught in the middle of this mess...both being such a military man and a partisan. To me, he's been one of the few Repugnican voice of reason throughout this fiasco and is in a position now to be a hero. Another in this class is Lugar, Hagel and Hutchinson...then throw in the outcasts like Chaffee, Snowe, Collins, Specter and DeWine and things start looking interesting.

Plus, we'll be sending a new Democrat to the Senate from Illinois, but that'll have to wait til January.

Cheers!

he handled Rumsfeld.

Of course I didn't like the way he went after Clinton.

Lindsay's Another One...
Of all the Inquisitioners, he was the most reasonable of that cabal. The vision of Hyde walking with the load in his pants, with the flag falling still give me chuckles...how innocent an age.

He's got a lot of constiuents in South Carolina starting to come home in pine boxes. This could be an interesting state to watch.

19.  McCain runs hot and cold like Graham - they were hot yesterday
IMHO, Hillary clinton, Mark Dayton, and Carl Levin were very good. With fair going to Ted Kennedy.

20. Notice...I kept McCain Off My List
I see him as an opportunist. He doesn't know which side offers more opportunity...being the next Nader or the savior of the GOOP. He's better than a majority of the Repugs, but not one I'd say puts conviction ahead of opportunity...at least at this point.

I'm gonna say the same about Hillary. Love her as I do, her position on this war has been wrong from day one and continues to be. She caved like the rest as they balanced the vote to give Bunnypants martial powers against how it works for their political futures.

Dayton did very well...I wish his questioning had been earlier or other Dems on that panel would have taken up his line of questioning.

Cheers

13. Elegantly stated
and your point about how important media support have been in all of this is so true. Before Rush,et al, they had the fundies beating the drum on TV and radio. Reagan and Bush were both guests on their TV shows frequently. During the Iran/Contra hearings Ollie North was getting bags and bags of telegrams and letters of support. Like a twisted scene from Miracle on 34th Street, the bags were piled around him during the hearings. How many knew that in the days leading up to his testimony, and during, the fundies were having virtual telethons for North, asking viewers to send telegrams and supplying all the information on how to do it? It was astonishing – but what was worse, not PBS, ABC, NBC, or CBS ever reported that that was happening – just that North had so much support.

15. We have way too many democrats
in positions of power that back this crazy and arrogant neocon dream of world domination gained through global conflict. If there is to be opposition to this madness, the party needs leaders who disagree. Otherwise, we're just going to be taken down this road to hell.

And we need leaders that will oppose them...not agree with them.
