Rummy, Bogie and Rick's Cafe
watching Rumsfeld testify yesterday reminded me a bit of a couple of famous scenes from Casablanca ...

Rick Blaine: How can you close me up? On what grounds?
Captain Louis Renault: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here.

Croupier: Your winnings, sir.
Captain Louis Renault: Oh, thank you.... very much. Everybody out at once!

of course, Renault turned out to be one of the good guys ... rummy is not ... the hyprocrisy of Rumsfeld's testimony was mind boggling ...

here's another line from Casablanca that sounds a bit like rummy trying to put all the blame for these abuses on a handful of bad guys:

Captain Louis Renault: Major Strasser has been shot. Round up the usual suspects.

all we need to understand here is which direction the information was flowing ... of course, bush and rummy have insisted that "they LEARNED about the atrocities" ... this would suggest that the information flowed "TO" them ... but it is clear, when we look at the motivations for such actions that they were desperate to find Saddam, they were desperate to find WMD's, and they believed they could "put the squeeze" on Iraqi prisoners to make them disclose whatever they knew ... the source of the policy was either bush, cheney, rumsfeld and wolfowitz or it originally came from the CIA ... and don't forget, during the 9/11 hearings, Tenet testified that he kept the "president" informed on a daily basis ... no, this is not something he just forgot to mention ...

and so my friends, the information about the abuses did not flow from the prison UP the chain of command ... it flowed as orders DOWN the chain of command ... and bush and rummy are GUILTY of war crimes ... and both of these bastards, and all the kings men (and Condi too), should be locked away for the rest of their lives ...

on a lighter note, here are a few great lines from Casablanca:

Annina: Monsieur Rick, what kind of a man is Captain Renault?
Rick: Oh, he's just like any other man, only more so.
******************************

Ugarte: You despise me, don't you?
Rick Blaine: If I gave you any thought I probably would.
******************************
Yvonne: Where were you last night?
Rick Blaine: That's so long ago, I don't remember.
Yvonne: Will I see you tonight?
Rick Blaine: I never make plans that far ahead.
******************************
Captain Louis Renault: How extravagant you are, throwing away women like that. Some day they may be scarce.
