Spc. Joseph Darby, Iraq Prison Whistle-Blower, Followed His Conscience

By Peter Jennings
ABC News
May 7, 2004

Army Spc. Joseph Darby, 24, is the man who sounded the first alarm about the abuse of Iraqis at Abu Ghraib prison — by people in his own 372nd Military Police Company.

The New Yorker magazine was the first to report that after seeing the pictures we are all so familiar with now, Darby put an anonymous note under the door of his commander. He described the incidents and the photographs he had seen.

2. His bravery/decency are best Mother's Day gift
he could give his Mom - with all her health problems and financial limitations, she raised a much finer son than Barbara Bush!

3. This guy was obviously raised well
but where are we as a society when doing the right thing makes you a hero? I'm trying to take anything away from him but have we sunk so low that we are shocked when people do what is right?

4. "We" Haven't Sunk So Low
"We" haven't sunk so low. The government has. And "we" are not the government. Big corporate interests and the rich run the government.

8. Good question.
By doing the right thing Spc. Darby has put himself in great jeopardy to his person and and well being, which is the very definition of heroism.

5. You might have heard that Somerset County (PA), where
Flight 93 went down, and the nine miners were rescued, began to be called America's County.

The fact that Joseph Darby grew up here, and that he showed his tremendous values and courage make me far more proud to live here than either of those other events.

6. I'm worried
I believe Rumsfeld mentioned him by name in public, placing him in the position of being the stool pigeon.

Frankly, I fear for his life in that lawless place; in a military stacked with appointed fundamentalist christian neocon crusaders.

7. His name has already been mentioned, in the Sy Hersh New Yorker
piece, I believe. He should be proud of his actions.

9. The real All American kid
I like to think I raised my children to be half as decent and as brave as this young man.

14. As a vet, I take pride in this young soldier.
The Army better be working very hard to make sure they have more Darby's and less England's. I salute this young troop for exposing the rat's nest of war criminals, who have disgraced the Army.

16. Give that man a promotion.
I believe there are more Joe Darbys than there are losers in the military. Too bad the Commander in Chief and Secretary of War (excuse me- Defense) are the biggest losers of all.
